My Grandpa passed away this summer and I want to make something for my relatives from some of his clothes. I have a few pairs of jeans and a lot of shirts. I was thinking maybe some pillows, lap quilts, aprons, purses...

Has anyone made anything out of clothes like this? I would love to hear any ideas or see some pictures of your projects.

You can use mens ties to make a flower pin for female relatives and also purses and other clothing. There are patterns on the Internet to make aprons out of shirts. Pillows, aprons, quilts, and other things.

I have made table runners so that they could be used during family celebrations. this helps with the sharing memories about her with other family members which everyone seems to really enjoy.

How about sewing Teddy Bears or some other type of stuffed animal. I know it would work with denim, but I don't know what fabrics your shirts are (I am hoping flannel or something thicker like that). I saw the idea a while back and loved the idea and it would be great for both men and women.

I have made pillows of tropical shirts. Lay the shirt flat right side up. Cut the square from the front and back at the same time with the buttons as the diagonal. I make my own pillow forms. The pillow is easy to clean because the buttons make it easy to open.

Such wonderful and creative ideas,,,,,

When my beloved Uncle passed away,,, I made lap quilts for his 2 adult children and his 3 grandchildren.
Every shirt he had was plaid,, blues, greens and browns, sew it was fun to make simple squares and have coordinating solid squares.
Then I machine embroidered uncle's name and birth/passing date...

They were 42 x 42... simple and easy,,, made to be hugged and used and hugged again.

Heater, what a sweet thing you are doing for your family...

If you wanted,,, you could do a simple 8x10 or larger, framed keepsake,,, use the shirt fabric as your background,,, add a sweet photo of grandpa,, maybe the little Eulogy card, and maybe something that reminds you of him,,, a penny from the year he was born,, a favorite poem,, well you get the idea... maybe even a photo of the recipient w/grandpa... then just juxtapo the items ontop of the fabric...

Every memory,,, big or small is precious.

Such wonderful ideas ladies. This is why I posted on here before I started anything. I have looked around the internet for some patterns. Unfortunately Linda my Grandpa didn't wear ties so I don't have any of those. I didn't think about table runners Joanna - that's a great idea!

Diana - is there more to the directions for the shirt apron? It just shows up as a picture and not a link. I'd love to try these! I thought about the aprons made from the butt of the jeans with fabric on the bottom, but I don't have many jeans.

Jana - do you have any patterns or know where you found the idea. I have a lot of flannel and and "button up" shirts. This would be perfect because my brother is having his first baby in Feb. and my sister just found out Monday she'll be having twins in April. I bet they'd love some stuffed animals from Grandpa's shirts.

Marie - I was thinking of of piecing together some pieces of different shirts for pillows, but I like your idea better. Seems like it would be much faster and like you said - easier to clean.

Grace - I was thinking of some lap quilts especially since some of his work shirts have his name on them. I just wasn't sure I'd have enough time to finish 13 of them by Christmas so I was looking for some more ideas too. I might try to do 4 - for each of his children and see how those go before doing the grandkids and great-grandkids. I do love your idea of the framed keepsake thing. I have a shirt that is pretty ugly in my opinion, but my grandpa wore it all the time! It would be great for a background.

Thanks again for the ideas and let me know if any more pop up. I'll post some pictures as I get things done.

Something we did was to take a bit of some of my grandparents' clothes and turn them into a table runner. That way we felt there was always a place set for them at the table and they remained with us when we gathered for meals. We used mostly the lighter fabrics for this - shirts, dresses, shifts, bandanas.

I have a lot of hankies that are brand new. I bet a table runner would be a great idea for them. Maybe some of the shirts would work great for this too. Thanks Allison. Do you happen to have a picture of yours? I'd love to see it.

A lot of my stuff is stored at my daughter's because I moved to Australia 6 years ago. You can only take two suitcases with you either way so my really personal stuff is packed away. I did a simple crazy quilt pattern on a long runner shape. There was enough to choose from that I could use mostly blues, greens, peach, tans, and yellows. My grandfather did wear some lovely old heavy flannel shirts which we made into balsam fir bags for Christmas for everyone and all around the house. I'm the only one who gets a real tree so I made some as ornaments so everyone's house could smell like a Christmas tree!
