Does anyone know if linseed oil is harmful to baby chicks, ducklings or goslings? We're building a wooden brooder box (with mesh bottom and top) and hubby was thinking of waterproofing it with linseed oil. I need to find out if it will kill the babies before he gets the okay. Anyone know where I can find out this info?
[Note: the box will probably have one of those brooder pads in it, and we can always just treat the outside of the box, and not the inside, but I'd hate to spend all this time, money and effort on a box we can't use.]
Erin, I'm certainly no authority... but my husband who is a serious woodworker tells me that linseed oil is flax oil. He takes flax oil as a supplement, and often comments how much he always liked to smell linseed oil while working with it. Unless there's some other ingredient added to the can of oil, I'd think you're very safe. Flax seed is often given to chickens to increase the egg's omega 3 content. Ann
