A few of you know my middle kid has been sick since Monday it just kept getting worse. Till today when her face was so puffy her nose pretty much disappeared. I took her to the doctor she has scarlet fever. I was just curious how many of you have had this and how common is it. She has medicine now but will still be contagious for 72 hours more. So hopefully the rest of us wont get it if we haven't already in the next 3 days.

Oh, Sunshine! I'm so sorry - I'll bet your little one is SO uncomfortable. I don't have any experience with Scarlet Fever, but I think it comes from strep throat? I'm not sure, however. Oh, boy, I hope the rest of you are well and stay well, and your little one gets better fast...sending good, healthy and safe thoughts!!!
XOXO, Libbie

yep it is a step throat virus. My husband has a throat that hurts so he may have it as well. His actually hurt before hers did. I am the one who has been taking care of her so I hope I am not the next to get it if someone does though I rather it be me than the other kids.

Gosh Sunshine, I had written out an email yesterday telling you it sounded just like a man here in town that the doctor kept sending home saying he had a viral infection. His symptoms sounded like your daughters and it turned out he had scarlett fever. I wrote out the e-mail, but then deleted it, deciding it was too presumptuous of me. I am glad all is well. You have had a tough winter. Prayers are with you girl!

Sunshine...sorry I didn't know your baby was sick! Here is a great website about scarlet fever. I sure learned alot about it from this site:
http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_viral/scarlet_fever.html
Keep her well hydrated and keep her going on that antibiotic even after she feels better...can't emphasis that enough. I hope she does well on the antibiotic and doesn't develop a rash from the antibiotic. Oh, and be sure to start her on some yogurt to help replace her normal flora! Don't want her getting a yeast problem from the antibiotic! Hopefully your hubby has been strep tested.

We had an outbreak at our school a few years ago. It's rough but certainly doesn't carry the same dangers it did years ago.

As a young girl I had scarletina. I had been sick and then I broke out in a rash all over my body. My mom called my aunt. She had eight children, so she was always called in to inspect before a doctor visit was made. I remember feeling yucky. I had strep throat all the time as a child. Scarletina is another name for scarlet fever, but it usually used when talking about a milder case of scarlet fever.
Sorry about your little one. It's no fun being sick |

Sorry to hear about this Sunshine. It is just the worst thing when one of our children is ill. Follow your Pediatrician's orders, & as Georgann said, make sure that you follow the directions for taking the antibiotics, & get some live, active yougurt to replenish the intestinal flora. Take care of yourself, too! Wishing you all the best..... |

My oldest had scarlet fever when he was 6. He took his anti-b's and was fine...We both found it pretty funny, though, when the rash, after 2 days, faded everywhere but his rear end!!!

You know the funny thing that happened. Sometimes the rash peals like a sunsburn after a few days so I was trying to prepare my daughter for flaky skin. I told her remember Pai's ( dad) sunburn how his skin pealed ( she said yes but it was a fib) I told her then her skin would do that. Her face went into the at little kid O look round eyes round mouth a bunch of O's. Any way I asked what was wrong . Her response you mean I am going to loose my checks (on her face). She was referring to her very round what I call her chipmunk cheeks very distraught as she knows that is my favorite feature of her face. I said no just a little of the skin will peal. You have to realize I wasn't getting what she was saying and she wasn't getting what I was saying. She thought her check where going to completely fall off and be bones. Took a little convincing and explaining till we both understood each other and all was good. She was still a little grossed out at the thought of skin falling off.

yeah but that is part of life. I was actually a little relied when the doctor said scarlet fever as there is medicine for that and in 10 days if no one else gets it your done. I was thinking she was having allergies and that can be a life long battle with restaurants and other people cooking for you and the like. Sounds weird but this is a blessing not to be an allergy. Positive is always better than negative.

Sunshine:
I had scarlet fever in the 1960s when I was a third grader. For weeks my mom thought I was pretending to be sick because I felt fine one day and sick the next and this went on for a long time. When she took me to the doctor he pulled the front of my undies out and told her to look! My entire front parts were covered with a red rash! I had scarlet fever.
They gave me penicillin and I was quarantined for a week and then I was fine. No lasting effects even then. They watched my hearing and sight for a few years after that (I had been sick for a while before the meds), but I was totally healed.
My poor mom felt so guilty that she cried at the doctor's office about not believing me. I remember having to comfort HER and tell her it was ok. It was a cute moment.
For the record, I did the same thing to my own son twice!! I thought he just didn't want to go to work, so forced him to go. Then his boss called an ambulance for him when he FAINTED on the job (he had pneumonia!!) He is 22 now and reminds me all the time!
Hope your baby is fine by now!

She is back in school come to find out from the doctor he thinks all of us had it but my oldest child. That is why my littlest had a ruptured ear drum , I had an ear ache, and my husband a sore throat. Funny thing about scarlet fever it get people all different some don't even know they have it. We are all noncontagious now and she is back in school. She is very happy about that. My kids actually like school missing it is like a punishment to them. One of her friends was excited as she had been waiting to give her a invite to a birthday party. Luckily she didn't miss it from being sick as she missed two class parties.
