We're working around the clock on my bread book due Oct. 1, but wanted to let you know that last week we received our shipment of Cast Iron Kitchen books. Over the weekend I signed a bunch and they were mailed out Monday morning. Keep your eye out for yours coming soon to a mail box near you:)
http://shop.maryjanesfarm.org/store/p/1286-MaryJane-s-Cast-Iron-Kitchen.aspx
Here's today's bread: quinoa flour (milled here), salt, water, air.
No store-bought yeast. We're using mothers for each type of flour. Here's what greeted me this morning.
And here's what I just ate:) Our own butter, our own raw, unfiltered honey, our own bread. Land of milk and honey!
Who here doesn't dive in for the crust first thing?
And here's my newest little heifer, born this past weekend. Meet Sophie (sound asleep in the clover in our orchard).

My copy of this new book arrived last week and it is FANTASTIC! MaryJane has outdone herself again with lots of delicious looking recipes all displayed with beautiful photos. There are also lots of helpful tips about cast-iron care which are essential for restoring old pieces and keeping yours in tip top shape. She also included lots of little tips here and there and some of the cutest vintage photos. I tried the basic cornbread recipe using a black bean BakeOver recipe and it was delicious. There are many recipes I plan to try using my Mom's cast iron cookware. I know they are going to be so down home delicious too!! If you have not purchased this book, I encourage you to do so. It is practical as well as coffee table beautiful. You will enjoy every Farmgirl page!!

Just thought I'd mentioned that the pan called "mini cake pan" in the book is Lodge's Drop Biscuit pan, still easy to buy. The breadstick pan with 11 slots is no longer made and is considered "vintage." Would love to own one. Working on that. And, the 14" baking pan labeled in the book is actually a pizza pan with 1/2" lip and very easy to buy. Again, made by Lodge. Wagner has made a 6 slot bread stick pan. Haven't seen a close up to know much about it. Recipes in book are awesome. Worth getting the cast iron to match the recipes!!!!

Our chapter meeting's potluck allowed us to try some fabulous food using the recipes and cast iron cookware from MJ's new book. The scalloped potatoes are to die for. The best ever. Mini apple pies were delicious. The chicken muffins outstanding with the onion sauce. And, we sampled the summer squash bread, moist and so full of flavor. What a treat!

The day after I received my cast iron cookbook. My aunt gave me my grandmothers Griswold fry pan. It is so precious to me to know my grandmother used it to feed her family of 11 kids, wondering what she cooked in it. She used it every day. I feel so grateful. |
