Ok, never made a mini apron before. Tried making my first one yesterday and had a dickens of a time trying to turn the tie. Any suggestions? Also, I'm trying to follow a pattern and I have no idea how they expect me to attach the thing. I'm doing my own thing for this because I just can't figure it out. I'm getting frustrated.

Katie, It's good that you do your "own thing" , we all do. I don't believe there are any set rules in the making of the mini aprons. I use ribbon and bias tape , as do the other ladies. I'm sure you will do well. Don't give up. This is suppose to be a fun thing , not frustrating.

Yes Katie, please don't stress. YES do your own thing. Don't be afraid to use file 13 ( trash can) if it just does not work out. I did when I started the western apron swap. I could not get those little things to do what I wanted...so the trash ended up with two. Think of them as experiments. Have fun.

Just tried again. I feel defeated. What kind of ribbon is best? I was using satin and it went anyway except where I wanted it and it wouldn't turn for me and then it was frayed. I wish there was someone close by to show me.

Are you using ribbon for the waist band and ties or for decoration? I usually use fabric and cut a strip about 20 inches long and 2 inches wide, then I fold both sides in to the middle, and fold the long strip in half. This can be pressed, like bias tape. (It ends up being about 1/2" wide. A narrower piece will yield a narrower folded piece.) Then I stitch the open side together for about 7". Now I insert the top, gathered part of the apron into the folded area, pinning it in place. Back in the machine, I stitch the waist band on to the apron skirt (this should be about 5 to 6 ") and finish stitching to close the open edge of the long piece. Now cut each apron string at an angle and you are finished. This is for a half apron/no bib. My hands have enough arthritis to make bias tape difficult. I also have trouble with curves, so I make most of my mini aprons as half aprons. I can churn out a set in an afternoon with a smile. When you are stressed it is difficult to smile. I hope my directions were clearer than mud. Do you have any Heat Bond or WonderUnder? I have been making my name tags by ironing a little white fabric piece to some of the product. When cool I write my info with a fine tip sharpie marker. Then I cut them into little rectangles and iron onto the back of each mini apron. Much less stressful than sewing them on the back. Thanks for answering Marilyn, that's how pretty much how I do waistbands, too.

Katie. Yes your own thing will be wonderful. I've usually got one or two misses before I get it right, too. We all do.

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement. I haven't gotten back to it. The weather is perfect and the garden is calling, maybe tonight.

Katie.... when it comes down to you and a project... "Show no fear"... Lol! And keep a seam ripper near by! Goodness knows... I have been sewing since I was 15(on a machine)...and to this day, my seam ripper rests right next to my scissors ... lol!
'Get a grip... and let'er...Rip!'... lol

With you joining, Bonnie, you will need to make 15 aprons. You will send them all to me per the directions above and you will get one of your own back. Glad to have you join us on this.
