I was called by the local WIC office today, as I do some breastfeeding and babywearing mentoring with them and some of their clients. There is a local mom who doe snot have a lot of funds. Her babe has allergies to every disposable diaper on the market. I am the ONLY person the WIC people know who cloth dipes a babe. They have asked me to make some for her and I am going to, free of charge, but I also told them I would put a call out to other mamas who have used cloth dipes.

Do any of you want to sew some up or donate the ones you are no longer using? I am not sure the weight or age of the babe, The WIC worker is going to call me back tomorrow after she meets with the Mama. I just thought I would put a call out right away. I am going to go thrifting this weekend and pick up a few wool sweaters to felt to make some covers for her. I have fleece and flannel to make the dipes already.

let me know either by posting here or emailing me if you would like to help.

Okay, here is the rest of the story.

Mom has all she needs equipment wise as her kids are VERY closely spaced. She has a boy age 2, a girl age 1 and the babe is 1 month old.

Jana said they can always use clothing and shoes and such, and whatever we can pull together for diapering the babe will be outstanding.

Thanks to all of you who can help out!

I have a 10 month old son so I could set aside things as he grows out of them for her. Just let me know!!! Usually I donate them to the local woman's shelter but she is so welcomed to anything I have.

Tasha,
I have some of those diaper covers called "BioBottoms." They're great - used them on my 2 boys. But as Sunshine asked, is the baby allergic to wool? That's what these diaper covers are made from. Just let me know if they will work, & how I should get them to you.

And now, speaking as a lactation consultant: with spacing like that, she clearly isn't exclusively breastfeeding. Are you working on that with her? Sounds like there are some major issues here. I know that WIC is very pro breastfeeding, & they usually have IBCLC consultants on staff. Does your local office have someone available?
Best of luck with your mentoring to her - what a wonderful thing for you to do!

Melanie-the WIC nurse told me the babe is not allergic to wool, She also told me that the mama did exclusively nurse her other two and through pregnancy to boot, however, she did ask for a can of formula on her checks (I am sad about that) when I get in touch with her I am going to see what I can do to persuade her to NOT supplement because it is only going to decrease her supply. I am the local office's only bfing mentor, but all of the nurses nursed their babes and are very supportive in it.

Again, whatever anyone can send will help her out tremendously and if I get too many, We will just keep them for other families in need, or hand themover to the family center so they can distribute so that we dont have so much hanging around. I am going to make a slew regardless for this very purpose. I just got some yummy flannels today from Elizabeth and stuff I ordered online and there are a TON of poeple on Freecycle who are donating old towels and flannel and sweaters. I am going to make a few fleece covers as well for the instance that there is a babe who is allergic to wool.

thanks for all the help and interest! When I put it all together, I will make sure to acknowledge all who have helped out!

Tasha I have 20 sets of disposable nursing pads. The school nurs got them as a sample and can't use them. Would you have a use for them? Here is a picture.

I can always take them along for her...perhaps it will help to encourage her to keep at nursing instead of caving to formula.

Glad to hear she should be able to use these diaper covers. Where should I send them?
BTW, sorry to say this, but I don't believe with her history that she was exclusively breastfeeding - some Moms say what they think we want to hear. Having babies so close together has also probably depleted her, & will present it's own issues for breastfeeding - as well as her own health, of course.

email me and I will send you my address, i se eyou don't have an email contact link.
The WIC nurse said she exclusively bfed through pregnancies. This is the VERY FIRST TIME she has asked for a supplement. Not all women go through that period of infertility while breastfeeding. I know I didn't a month and a half after Zoe was born I was menstruating again and a month after that I was ovulating (I keep a few tests around because we plan another babe). I believe her that she was, especially with her history with WIC and based on my own breastfeeding/fertility experience.

Hi, Tasha
I sent a note to you with my info - hope you receive it.
Yes, I am aware of those very unusual women who ovulate so early, even with no supplementation. (I am sure I don't need to tell you that it is not the norm.) It is why we always tell new Moms that they will still need to use birth control - even when they just laugh @ the thought of having sex again! ;)
However, upon closer examine, other issues are often present with such early ovulation. Given the 3 repeat occurances this Mom has, it clearly should be investigated. As I mentioned, it depletes her in so many ways. Hopefully that will be all part of the package of support she will receive.

I imagine, given the area we live-very rural and most people are on government assistance of some sort, and most people have babes VERY early in their lives, we have one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the state-I imagine she is not the sort who keeps track of her cycle, like most women I run across in my mentoring. I have taught a few how to-as I have been doing it since I became sexually active- but most just don't seem to care enough, it is sad to say. It is clear she loves her babes and will do what she can to make them comfortable, but she needs to stop having them so close together!! I cannot wait to chat with her. I have so much to share with her and I get excited each time a new woman comes my way to mentor about pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, mommying and cycling. I think it is what I am called to do for this point in my life (aside from my craftings.) Why else would I have this obsession with the gambit of womanhood!? LOL!

Anyhow, I digress....

I plan to chit chat with her abuot charting if she isn't using other means of birth control. It is the only birth control I use.

Even giving a pacifier can effect ovulation. Maybe she exclusively breastfed but gave her children pacifiers. i know that with my son, I tried a pacifier at night because my first child didn't sleep well and had to nurse all night. then with my third i decided not to go the pacifier route. it made a huge difference. with my son my cycle started when he was only 4 months, with my girls, they were both 16 months. I think those nighttime feedings really make a difference when it comes to supressing ovulation. Just a thought.

Yes, I was about to say also- for lactational amenorrhea purposes- birth control using breastfeeding- she should not be giving pacifiers. For comfort AND feeding purposes, the breast only must be used, as well as unrestricted night access to the breast. (Though I followed the rules, and I had a mini period at 3 and 4 months- then nothing again til 11 months. I still considered myself fertile after that 3 month spotting episode.)

"Exclusive breastfeeding" is like saying "natural childbirth"- there are so many different definitions, you really need to clarify exactly what she meant by exclusive breastfeeding. And definitely talk to her about charting- we used FAM for birth control for one year before we conceived our baby on the first try! :)

Grace took a pacifier against my wishes (she was born in the hospital) but she promptly spit it out. ZOe has no idea what one is....We saw a child-Grace's age-in Target recently who was talking about her toy that her mom got her and she had one in her mouth. I hate that! Grace was horrified that such a big girl had a pacifier in her mouth!

I bought a paci for my daughter when she was about three months (correllation?? Hmm....) but she never really took it. I got it because she was doing this pulling off without breaking suction thing that was extremely painful!! I thought I'd give her a paci to do it with instead- the first time I tried it, she gave me this look- it's so hard to describe- like, "who are you trying to kid??" She would occasionally play with it, but never really took it.

hey I would have gone crazy without the paci! I was home alone all week with my baby while my husband travelled for work. It was one of the few things that gave me a moment's peace. There are worse things.

True, there are definitely worse things- we were just talking about the paci in relation to ecological breastfeeding- if you give a paci and you're trying to do that, then it could sabotage your efforts.

Yes, you are all correct ............ pacifier use, & decreased night time breastfeeding are associated with earlier ovulation - as well as decreased milk supply for a lot of women. Another factor is the introduction of solid food before 6 months of infant age. Every Mom must also remember that the pacifiers are made of materials which may be injurious to the baby's health. While it is true that some are safer than others, it is not true that we know 100% that any individual pacifier is 100% safe. And equally important is the fact that pacifier use is not good for infant development. During artificial nipple feeding, or pacifier use, the position & action of the tongue are different than during breast-feeding. One interesting website is: www.brianpalmerdds.com. He is a nationally known Dentist doing research on jaw development, teeth malocclusions, & sleep apnea. His discoveries related to breast feeding & the development of sleep apnea in adults is fascinating! He spoke @ a Lacatation conference I attended last year - excellent presentation.

That's true, pacis can also cause nipple confusion if you're giving one while breastfeeding- I want to know what materials are pacis made out of that could be harmful to children? The two I have are made from silicon, which is inert.

I breastfed my first baby and used a pacifier and had my period at six weeks and it stayed regular from then on. With my son I didn't use a pacifier, didn't supplement, let him nurse on demand and at night and my period returned at three months and has stayed regular. It does happen!! :o)Good luck to the mama...sounds like she is doing a good job. By the way, most WIC clincs that I have heard of are not very pro-breastfeeding. I have heard many people exclaim "Why should I breastfeed, I can get formula free through WIC" (I'm not kidding!). It's sad, but that's what most people think of WIC (a free place for formula, instead of a place to help the low income get the food that they need for their children and themselves).

Sarah, I got your box today!! how very generous! I am awaiting others to come before Wednesday and Thursday as those are the days the WIC ladies come to Pine River. That's wehn i will deliver everything donated and made.

On a related note, I got a call from Jana, the WIC nurse, today. She said the mom decided NOT to take the can of formula for the babe as it seems he is going through a growth spurt. He is only a month old so they really haven't had time to work out the kinks of nursing yet, you know? He was a hefty 13# at 5 weeks old!!!! holy Moses! I think Zoe was maybe 9.5# at 5 weeks! That's a big boy!

Thanks again for all who are helping this mom! I hear she is so very grateful to all of us mamas!!

I'm glad it made it there Tasha. I'm very happy to help the mom out and so very happy to see that she is not taking the formula!! I have to tell you this. I would say that 95-98% of the babies that we get in the hospital are formula fed. The only one of my babies that ever got sick was the one I only breastfed for 12 weeks before I went back to work. I wholeheartedly believe that breastfeeding is the perfect thing for babies. Oh, and I intend to email the pork board or whoever. That is absolutely absurd what they are trying to do.

Blessings....
Sarah
