Saw an ad in our local paper for boer goats, but I don't know much about them. I am looking for unwanted "pets" to give them a new home rather then have them go off to the sale. |

That is so heartwarming to hear Kathy! I wish I could tell you about them. I'm sure SOMEONE here will know.

Kathy Good for you--I am so glad that you are doing animal rescue. Boer goats are very popular where I live in Texas, but I don't know much about them. Why don't you "google" the term; I am certain that there will be a great deal of info.

Kathy, Boar goats are what is know as meat goats. I have 1 boar mama with a baby and 1 half boar baby. They are usually white with a red head although sometimes they are all white. They are a medium sized goat--not as large as a nubian but bigger than an alpine. Although you could milk them they are not know for their milk productions. They are great pets, but like any goats they all have their own personality. I have had them that follow you around like a dog and then have had some that would run from you if you came near them. Hope this helps some. Good luck, Jeanna

Thanks everybody. I did a little research on google last night. Found out about their meat status. So they sort of fall into the beef cattle/hog catagory. They are raised for meat. Maybe this person is just trying to liquidate, I'll do more research, again, thanks! |

If you contact the person about the goat you can ask specific questions. First, why is the goat being sold? If it's a male is it a wether or buck? Does it respect fencing? Does it lead? What is it eating? Is it on pasture or will you have to introduce it to grass carefully to avoid bloat? Is it UTD on shots? When was it last wormed and with what medication? Different worms are treated with different meds. How are its feet and when were they last trimmed? If you don't know how to trim feet the seller will probably give you a lesson.
Has it been vet checked lately? If it hasn't been that's not necessarily reason to be alarmed. I do all of immunizations and worming and the vet comes only when I have an animal down that I can't manage on my own. Is there a vet in the area that tends to livestock?
My first goats were brothers headed to the meat market. They can be a challenge but they're also a lot of fun because of their unique personalities.

Thanks Robin, that was a pretty good list to get me started. We have horses so I am somewhat familiar with a few things such as hoof trimming, de-worming and giving shots. I'm still not sure this is the thing for us but I am better informed now, that's for sure. Thanks again! |

I have a mixed boar female, a nubian female, and a boar Billy. And the two Boars last week presented me with the cutest little Boar baby you've ever seen!!! they have really neat personalities, at least mine do, and mine will NEVER EVER be used as meat goats! Jodie appears to be one who will have a great deal of milk as well!
