Hi all :) I'm trying to plan a celebration for 4th of July... my hubby's parents will be joining us, and possibly my youngest brother and his family. I may even invite the neighbors. Anyways, I thought it would be neat if we shared food ideas for this celebration...
The only thing I have set in stone right now (unless it changes, hahaha) is a berry trifle for dessert... I'm thinking angel food or pound cake, whipped coconut cream, and fruit including blueberries and strawberries.
Anyone else?

Deviled Eggs are always a must, along with potato salad, coleslaw and baked beans. I personally love doing a 4th of July party as a potluck to get everyone involved.

I agree with the potluck suggestion. When you host a party, there are so many other things you do, like cleaning inside and out. In order to relax and enjoy yourself, keep it simple and have others bring some side dishes. Veggie trays with dip are also good, and you can either make one or order it from a grocery store.

Great suggestions ladies... I can certainly do it as potluck to an extent... my inlaws will be staying with us (coming in from MD) and my brother from the next start over... though they can still bring something. The neighbors definitely can!!!
Does anyone have ideas for a red, white, and blue theme? I was thinking caprese salad, with purple basil instead of green... not quite blue, but might work...

All of these suggestions sound great, Shannon! I think you are going to have a great time and it is impossible to make a mistake with a big family gathering. Just the fun and fellowship will be special!

We do a rock roast. You take a large beef roast. Mix salt with water. Put a brown paper bag out with a layer of the salt mixture. Pack salt mixture around the entire piece of meat. Wrap the paper bag around the meat and tie it. Put it on a grill for 4 to 5 hours. Crack the salt mixture that has turned rock hard. Slice the meat. Yummy.

Here's an idea: try hot German potato salad instead of regular cold potato salad. We had several different versions of the hot German at our church picnic and they were all wonderful!! I imagine all the different versions are on the internet. Anne

You could do a fruit platter in the shap of a flag. Blueberries in the upper left corner and strawberries and watermelon as the red rows and lighter colored fruits like apples, bananas, and honeydew as the white rows.
Potato salad and baked beans are always a must for the 4th of July!

Yummy ideas ladies!
Right now I'm looking at venison steaks with a blueberry basil salsa, pasta salad, and a blueberry, strawberry and green salad with honey vinaigrette. I'm really trying to keep with a red white and blue theme, lol

One thing we've done for large summer gatherings is supply the main and then potluck the rest. An easy thing we've done is rub a bunch of different chicken pieces, breasts, legs, thighs, with a dry rub then roast it low and slow in the oven until it's pretty much done. Then we take it out, throw it on the grill, slather most of them with BBQ sauce and get it charred up to finish it off. We leave some pieces without the BBQ sauce and just char it a bit on the grill for those that prefer that.
Doing it this way avoids chicken that is charred on the outside and still raw on the inside. :) And the BBQ sauce technically makes it a "red" option, right? lol |

Do your baked beans in the crock pot and they'll be easy and warm. Kabobs are always fun and you can mix it up for a variety of tastes - veggie, beef and chicken. Add pineapple chunks, cherry tomatoes, onion and peppers. You can make them ahead and marinate the day before. Just grill as guests arrive.
Have fun!!!
