Grandson called to tell me Presley, their 15 yr old German Shepherd died today. She had a rough start in life, had parvo and was nursed to health by a caring Vet (who happened to have the hots for my daughter too). She was deaf and Lori said recently she seemed to have doggy alzheimers, like she had forgotten everything she ever knew. Big dogs have been inside at night with this single digit or less and Presley walked into a corner and just stood there, like she didn't know how to back out or turn to continue on. It was her time. That's two in one week, with Kobe the cat dying a few days ago. Presley was a great mother dog, even took care of tiny rescue kittens, licking their bottoms to stimulate them after Lori bottle fed them. She will be missed, as will all who have left us recently. Has it been a hard month for our pets or just seem that way?

I'm sorry, Ronna--especially since we have Rose, our German Shepherd--certainly brings it home to me...
My husky had senior moments, too. She was sometimes "out where the buses don't run" but I loved her until she couldn't stand anymore and that, unfortunately was her downfall.
It has been a bad month for pets--my mother and I have been teary all night, as she had to put my gran's cat to sleep this afternoon. She developed a tumor on her tongue last month that quite literally stopped her from eating. It was really sad, such a little life, but a long one.
It's so hard to let them go--but I can guarantee that Presley knew how much she was loved and needed by her family.

thanks ladies...and thanks, Tracey, for having the link to the poem, I didn't have it handy to share. Just talked to Lori and she's very upset, but figured she would be taking her in to the vet soon and Presley did it on her own terms. She'll take her in to be cremated tomorrow and her ashes can be next to Mouse, my gray kittie who lived at her house.

Jonni,
I just reread your post. We rescued (really, off a roof with a bad leg injury) a cat years ago that got squamous cell cancer in her mouth. Did surgery to remove, but it eventually came back and she couldn't eat, so we knew it was time. Just another of the critters buried around that tree. She was our garage cat, spent 99% of her time there, by choice. It's never easy, even though we know it's coming. Hugs to everyone.

Ronna- So sorry your family has lost two pets so close together. They really do become members of our family: they frustrate and confuse us, amaze and astound us with their own unique and quirky personalities and we love them and they us unconditionally. Take comfort that you loved them well and they knew it.

Ohhhh Ronna how sad, especially for your Grandson. This sure has been a rough time for our pets.
We had our old Rosie for 16 years. She was a stray, had heartworms and was pregnant when we took her in. But what a sweet friend she became to us! She watched over the kids at play outdoors and "herded" them when they rode bicycles. She was always a very loyal, sit at your feet, undemanding dogfriend. Like your daughter's Presley, she had many senior moments lately. She would stand between an open door and the wall with no idea how to back out. Sound familiar? Rose startled and was fearful of everything, began wetting in the house...so sad to see her this way.
We made the decision to put her down last week. Maggie, Rose's doggie sidekick, rode with me to the vet's office. I held Rose in my arms and watched the life go out of her cloudy old eyes. It was very peaceful but very difficult. I felt so much guilt... our vet was very kind and gentle with her, and me. I am so grateful for the wonderful care they give our animals. It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.
There is a poem I heard read once by Jimmy Stewart...It's called Ole' Blue...does anyone know it?
The few lines I remember go something like this...
"Ole Blue, ya good dog you.
We dug his grave with a silver spade,
and lowered him down with a golden chain,
with every link we call his name...
Ole Blue, ya good dog you."
It's been running through my mind all week.
