I was trolling around on pinterest when I stumbled across this cute re-purposing idea...
an apron made from a pillowcase...
looks pretty simple,,, cut open (down the stitched side)the pillowcase.. cut a wider pc for the waistband, cut 2 pc for the ties and the remaining pc is the apron skirt. then just stitch up like a regular apron... I think the name of the blogger is the 'humblethimble.blogspot'... I The blog didn't give measurements just these images... but should be fairly easy to make... 'Sew now I am off to see if I have a spare pillowcase... if not,,, off to the Thrift I go....weather permitting! lol!

my thoughts are... if you measure from the hem up and cut at 18".(skirt).. then cut 2 more pc at 4" wide ea and use the remaining pc for the waist band you should be good.. I would also suggest using a queen or king pillowcase.... a reg size pillowcase would be great for a child or a ladies size small ... just adjust the main pc (skirt) so that you have enough width for the ties and waist.

oh and if you want Pockets,, just use a coordinate color fabric... as for making it cutsie,,, use bits-o-scrap lace, doillies, yoyos, buttons etc...
Oh I am 'itchin' to get stichin'... lol!

ok,,, one more thought,,, you could also,,, for fun,,, use a coordinate color fabric for the waist and ties which would probably work out well if you are using a standard size pillow... I like wider and longer ties so using another fabric would be great... but then again the whole idea is to use/repurpose what you have... Oh how my brain toys with me! snork, giggles!!!

Love this idea! (Although I've yet to see an apron I didn't love LOL!!) I think I'll have to be searching for some pillow cases soon.

Thanks Grace. Looks like next Christmas everyone will get an apron. LOL. We have a store that often sells a pair for $2.99. Good idea for a craft fair! Oh no another thing to get addicted to. No wonder I never sleep.Yikes!

Neat idea, Grace. If you leave the top of the pillowcase sewn together, and press under the cut edges 1/2" or so, you can then gather the skirt piece and insert it INTO the top section. Then you can add the ties and Viola! an apron. LOL! I wasn't sure if she did it that way or opened up the top section, too.

Linda,,, for sure a good idea.. creating a "caseing" at the top of the skirt/apron... stitch the 2 ties, end to end (making 1 very long tie) and then run them through the casing and then you could tack down (and embellish w/a button or yoyo at each end opening) to keep the waist in place.

I found one at the Thrift with sweet tiny lil pink, yellow and blue flowers,,, and I found a sweet hanky w/ (almost) matching embroidered flowers on it... sew,,,, hopefully tomorrow I will have a sewing day and make an apron from the pillow case and use the hankie as a decorative pocket.... Wish me luck!

oops! forgot to post the rest of the pics...
I added the button on the yoyo as an after thought....
I used a hankie for the pocket,,, did a little creative folding and stitching to keep the integrity of the hankie...
I decided to use contrasting fabric for the waistband..... What an easy peasy apron project.

What a cute and clever idea! Your apron turned out so pretty too!! This would make an awesome gift if you wanted to use it for the Jubilee weekend and wrap it around some sort of baked bread or cookies. I bet there are a gazillion decent pillowcases at thrift stores what would create darling new aprons. Thanks for sharing!!

Winnie... for sure...so many homeless pillowcases laying saddly arou d in Thrifts... In fact, I am heading out for coffee with some gal-pals in a wee bit... and out little Thrift shop is near the coffee shop, guess where I am headed after coffee! Lol!
Oh and fyi.... I used a queen size pillow case for my apron but a standard would would work as well... (had fabric left over...to make more yoyos with)...

Very cute Grace. Now I need to look for pillow cases. Sometimes my list gets long on good ideas. In fact I bet I have some pillow cases upstairs. Now if I can just figure out how to turn them into aprons. Nancy Jo
