Last night as my husband went to pick my daughter up from work, he had to tell her that Leroy was gone.
Leroy is her first barnyard buddy that she bought at a farmer's auction. She only paid $12 CAN for him, and loved him very much (Yes, I did too)
Leroy was a Jersey Bull and thought of himself more of a dog (REALLY) He would get out of the pasture or barn, and follow you around the yard, if you were outside.
Friends of mine came to visit a few weeks ago, and came into the house laughing. When I asked what was so funny, they informed me that before they could come into the house, they had to stop and talk with Leroy, as he was at the back door.
There is a picture of him in the link below.

I am so sorry, Mary Jane! Leroy is so cute. By "gone" do you mean deceased? If so, what happened? How old was he?

What a sweetheart! We will say a prayer for you and your tonight. I so so so so so understand. When my sons first llama passed (He considered him not only his best animal but a friend - he was the only one Nick would talk to about his feelings about the passing of his father) Nick and "Tony Llama" had 13 years together and many folks just could not understand the level of grief one can and does have for their animals. We feel your pain and hope that in time it will ease. It never completely goes away but remember all the wonderful times you shared.

He was not a year old, and we had a couple of terrible cold nights. With the wind chill (in an old drafty barn) it was more than -45 for a couple of nights. He caught pnemonia. Faith (daughter) is taking it pretty good. When being told about it, we also reminded her that there is a reason for everything, and that this is part of the farm life. We are planning to go to auction in spring and make another purchase, but what I can say does aggrivate me is the fact that some farmers will take a baby calf less than one day old to auction. Why not leave it with mom for one week, to get that colostrum that babies need, and benefit from. I think I would pay more for an animal that I knew nursed from mom for a while, rather than pay for something that may or may not make it...
Okay, I've vented...time to get some housework done..

I'm so sorry about Leroy, How sad. I too would pay more for an animal that had the benefit of getting its mother's milk for at least a week. It should be a no brainer that all animals, even humans get a better head start if they are nursed by their mother first, provided the mother is healthy. I hope your next purchase is a lucky one! - 45 degrees, yikes! I always worry that my chickens are going to freeze to death when we get our cold nights of -20 degrees!

I'd rather live my life with a "full plate" than an empty one. Life is not a rehearsal... eat up!
