Just withdrew my daughter from public school last week and we are starting our journey into homeschooling. Wondering if any veteran homeschoolers have any curriculum recommendations. I'm most concerned about math at this point. Steph was failing math and having such a hard time. I've heard that Saxon is great and actually got a used set off eBay which should be here next week. Talked with a homeschooling mom about 6 miles from here who has taught her 4 children, the oldest is 17. She has used Bob Jones exclusively. She has a complete 7th grade curriculum that she is giving to me! What a blessing! Her 3rd daughter is in 8th and doesn't need it now.

Wow what a great lady to give you that homeschool curriculum. I had homeschooled before we moved to our very small town with a great public school. I don't have 7th graders but I used Abeka and really liked their math. And I know my husband used Calvert School when he was growing up. I don't have any other ideas. But have fun and enjoy being with your daughter. I have read your blog before and saw that you were planning on doing this. Enjoy!

Saxon math is a good program to use.
Also sometimes your local school board will have a media center where they have free text books. Ask around and see if your area schools have such a service.
I also encourage you to become involved in a local homeschool support group, if anything you'll have others nearby to network with/exchange ideas with.

We've homeschooled since 97. I personally don't care for Abeka(it's written for private schools and it drives me nuts to weed through and it's to much school at home in my book) and my older daughter HATED Saxon, we pick and choose our curriculum. The Elijah Company is a really good place to start - lots of articles and info on the different methods. Nobody homeschools the same as anybody else!Which is of course the beauty of homeschooling but can be intimidating.
We were using Sonlight, also Learn to Write the Novel Way, lots of reading, life skill stuff, unit studies .Lots of Charlotte Mason method stuff.
Don't stress to much, it usually takes at least a year to settle in, and get past the "You're Just Mom" attitude if they've been in public school at all! If you get Math, some writing (journaling? letters, book reviews on Amazon, etc) and she reads a bit each day....that's great especially if you throw in Bible, and life skills (chores).

Unit Study -- my kids really seem to get into it when we do these. ALthough it is not our entire curriculum, when we do the studies that's all we do!
http://www.iditarod.com -- you can track mushers, learn rules and history - it's orignally based on the serum run to Nome, vet/dog care,etc. Lots of fun!
If you do a search on Unit studies you can find lots of free ones on the net........and it might be a great place to start! Something fun that interests her.

ps.... be aware that BJU has had racial issues in the past, it is definetly school at home as well but a good place to start! Welcome to the homeschool "club!"

Thanks for the info! I'm looking forward to getting both the Saxon and BJ math to see if she likes either. I definitely don't want to use Abeka. She had that when she went to Christian school in the 2nd grade and hated it. I certainly don't want to do school at home either. Steph has been under enough stress and I want this to be a fun & relaxed time for us. I'll look over the rest of the BJ stuff and if I don't want to use it then maybe someone else can.
