I was working on a sewing project yesterday and the darned machine kept acting up. I had to resupply the bobbin, and when I rethreaded the machine to get back to work, the thread was bunching up underneath the fabric. It seems to be getting caught up on the metal dowel that holds the bobbin or maybe another part in the bobbin casing. Does this make sense? Anyone know what Im doing wrong? I have rethreaded the whole machine several times, reinserted the bobbin, etc. And Ive gotten out my manual (only like 5 pages) and cant find the problem Im hoping someone here can help.

If the thread looks fine on top, but is bunching up on the underside, then it is a threading problem. This was told to me by the repair person at a sewing shop.
Have you taken the bobbin out and reinserted it? Are you threading it into the case the right way? So it's coming off the bobbin in the same direction as it's going under the catch and not doubling back? I don't know if you understand that, but what I mean is that the thread should not make a U-turn...
You can also check to se if any lint is caught somewhere and the last thing I'd do is change your needle.

What type of machine do you have? The reason I ask is because I was having a similar problem with my machine and found out it was because I was not getting the thread to "pop" forward in the tension holder. If your machine was working before and isn't now, that may be the problem

Mine will do that if my upper tension is too loose or the bobbin tension is too tight. Be sure to check and make sure your tensions are set correctly. Also it will do this if I don't hold my thread when starting the first stitches...be sure to hold it to the back of the presser foot. Also if the thread is pinched somewhere or if the bobbin is loaded in backwards. Check to see if it is spooling off forward or backward when you slip it in. My bobbin must spin counter clockwise in the bobbin case. Just some suggestions.
Oh, LOVE your blog and the soup looked delicious!! I also see you will be moving back to Virginia Beach...I live in Midlothian, southwest of Richmond a few miles. Straight east on I64 from VB.

Thank you all for your kind suggestions. When the wee ones go down tonight I will get back to the sewing and try all that you have listed. Im sure it has something to do with the bobbin or the tension there. Ill keep you posted!
Oh and Aunt George, when I get back to the beach, we must get together! I would love to see your chickens.

Hey Eren,
Yes, look me up when you get to ole' Virginia. But I hope you won't be dissapointed that I don't have any chickens, I live in a subdivision and just dream about having chickens and a little farm. It is on my 5 year dream plan though! Our subdivision covenants state no livestock, even though I live on my own three acres, We didn't know when we bought this place that we couldn't cut down trees...our three acres happen to be a bird sanctuary in the Chesapeake Bay Preserve system. ARGH......I would so do it all different!
Say, did you figure out your sewing machine challenge? I will be spending time sewing today. Can hardly wait, I've been away from my sewing way, way too long now.
