The last few months have been extremely stressful for us... but God is seeing us through. After considering everything, I thought about the fact that I can glorify God by helping others no what to POSSIBLY expect. By no means am I saying that everyone retiring will have this happen to them... it is the military after all ;)

Hubby officially medically retired on November 28th. Due to having quite a bit of vacation days, he was on terminal leave for not quite two months prior to that. We actually left our last base the second week of October. It was the beginning of November that we learned that just because the military "promises" something... well just don't count on it!

1st - our belongings were suppose to be to our new home on November 8th... then no later than November 21st. Everything finally arrived December 9th.

2nd - they can hold your last active duty check pretty much as long as they want. We still have not received it!!! And there is nothing we can do about it!!!

3rd - don't expect your retirement and/or disability checks to start right away. We were expecting them to start January 1st... but found out yesterday they will not be starting until February 1st.

4th - Once you are retired, no one seems to be "able" to help you. We have called numerous people in DFAS and our MPF from the last base... we generally get the response "we can't help because you are no longer active duty."

The point of this post is to let people know what is possible... to prepare for the worst. We have spoken with others and their stories are similar... so plan!!!! And most of all, trust that God will see you through!

Have you read the military retirees' online newsletter, The Afterburner? It has information and contacts to help retirees in it.

So sad that we treat the military this way :( Everything should be prompt and seamless.

Keep fighting for everything! Hubby is 5 years out now and we are still fighting the system. Make sure you keep everything documented and keep on them. Don't give up! I am hoping, with this new administration, some of VA disaster will be cleaned up.

Shannon....I'm new to this farmgirl chatroom. I was just looking over your post....My husband just retired a couple of weeks ago from the USAF! 22 years of service.

I understand some of the issues you are going through. Trust me, the VA isn't always much help, either. We know from experience. If you need someone to listen, I'm here!

I hope things work out. It is unreal to me how our veterans are sometimes treated. :(

I'm not retiring from the military unfortunately, but I am ETS'ing this December and it's been a very hard thing for me to accept. :-( I'm so glad we have a whole group dedicated to military farmgirls!
