| I was hanging out 3 loads of laundry today and I couldn't believe it when I pulled a sheet out of the basket and it was "crispy" already! Now I knew it would have to freeze dry, but I thought I'd at least have it on the clothesline before that happened! That's cold! |

Now that is cold! I have had it freeze on the line before I had everything hung but not in the basket...and I agree nothing smells quite as good as line dried clothes.
by the way, I am very jealous..it has been raining so much in Ohio that I have not been able to hang out clothes in weeks

You girls who live where it gets that cold is more of a woman than me. If it drops below 65, I'm freezing. Still have windows raised and sun will come out for awhile then it goes behind clouds. The weather is reporting we will be in the 20's and 40's next week. I'm so ready for warmer weather. Hope all of you are safe and warm.

Laura, you are a lucky girl, the only thing is I actually LIKE winter! Believe it or not, I love the snow and the way the trees look against the sky when they have dropped their leaves. It just is way too cold right now, I think it was 4 degrees this morning, and I would like to be visiting you in Mississippi!
I worry about all the animals outside when it gets this cold! Cindy

Tasha, It really does work! I have a dryer but never use it even in the winter. For the most part they dry completely, but sometimes I have to bring them in and use drying racks or hang them on hangers in the shower. They smell so good that they can actually make the room with the drying racks smell great!
I have to say that I am one of those crazy people that LOVES to do laundry and I don't expect everyone to understand this! |

I am with you Cindy..that whole act of washing and then hanging the clothes out is almost peaceful to me. I really feel connected to women from the past who did this type of work all their lives...that's why I do most of the work I do without modern conveniences...it's good for my soul. I do use a washing machine but have had a wringer wash in the past..something about this type of work just speaks to me.

| My laundry froze on the line the other day but the wind made them dry and not wrinkled. I have always loved to hang out the laundry and periodically wash the quilts and blankets just so I can have the smell in the house. Cold or no cold, I'm outside doin what I love best! Susan |

Growing up we hung our clothes out in the winter if it was breezy, because cold or not, they dried. By the mid 70's we got a dryer and only hung out quilts, blankets and stuff like that. I always had a dryer until a few years ago when our vintage (came with the house) dryer stopped working and no one could fix it. For six months I was a good sport and hung clothes outside. When it started to get cold again I mentioned to my husband that we would be switching chores and he would be doing laundry in the cold. Then the replacement was found quite quickly! Hmmmm.... When we were first married he did laundry every week for about 5 years so I really can't complain now!
I like the smell and texture of sun dried but do not appreciate arthritic hands cramping up in the cold hunting for clothespins while holding freezing cold wet laundry! I have become a creature of comfort! I guess I am a fair weather laundress!

Well, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who likes to do laundry. I do have a dryer but since I never use it, I am thinking about giving the washer and dryer to my kids. I think I could get a washer that uses less energy and we could do something nice for the kids at the same time.
Changing the subject...ever try to type with a cat laying on your hands? This silly thing jumps up here EVERY time I get on the computer! Good thing I'm a cat lover!

My husband doesn't appreciate line dried clothes.He'd rather have dryer dried.
I have been hang clothes in the basement, but I miss the great ozone or whatever it is when clothes are dried outside.
Last month I used the dryer for all the loads and our electric bill was sky high!
I said enough is enough and I started hanging in the basement, but it's time to shovel out to the clothes line and get them outside.
I open the windows and air out our house 2 to 3 times a week also, love the smell!

Karen, Did you really see a difference in your bill? I have wondered MANY times how much money I have saved line drying our clothes. I once heard that it was about .50 cents a load. Do you think that's about right? I guess we can't measure what we really get out of it though!
I bet if your husband knew how much you were saving he'd bend on the dryer thing. Good luck...Cindy |
