Well, we've already celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas here (magazine content) and now we're onto Valentine's Day today.
What do you get when you pair the last of your Macintosh apples with roses?
But first, how about this luscious photo Karina snapped early this morning while our apples were still covered in rain from last night?
Well, apples + roses = pie, of course. Valentine's Day Pie! DIL Ashley is making two pies today for our Feb/March 2017 issue (stay tuned). One is cheesecake with shortbread crust topped with our Macintosh apples sliced and curled to look like roses. And the other pie is a custard with a butter crust topped with butter crust roses.

Thanks for the heads up, MaryJane. I always look forward to your magazine and will be looking for the recipes. Ashley does such pretty pies. Her roses are great. I might challenge myself to see if I can make the roses. I said might - don't hold me to it.

Have you seen the photo at the Sur La Table website of a pumpkin pie edged with acorn leaves made with pie crust? It's stunning. I don't usually decorate my food, but using a simple cookie cutter, one can do this. Besides, who doesn't love flaky pie crust? Ashley needs to play more with her food.....:)

Apples! {Sniff sniff, :( } We had no apples to pick here in Connecticut this year because first we had warm days this spring followed by a bad frost which killed all the buds, then we got hit with a drought.
Those roses look tasty and beautiful! Can't wait!

Nicole,,, noooo,,, say it ain't soooo... When we lived in New Britain, daddy always brought home the most lovely box of paper wrapped apples,,, I swear they were the biggest and bestest apple,, course I was only 11years old so everything was bigger including candy bars at the local corner store,,, ahh memories,,,
Hopefully you'll have twice as many apples next year!,, in the mean time, enjoy the lovely recipes in the upcoming Feburary MJF magazine,,
hey Maryjane,,, how about a "Scratch-n-sniff" in that issue???? just thinking!!! lol! sniff sniff, yumm!

How sad Nicole! I would be heartbroken. Apples are so good and one of my favorite fruits. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have any. Hopefully next year is a better year.

Nicole, I feel the same, my apple tree didn't give me one apple. Ours was due to early frost. My apple tree is my baby, because it is a small one. The apples are red and taste like granny smiths. The tree is full grown, if that makes any sense. Maybe next year. Also I remember when we lived in Groton, Conn.. My parents took us to an apple orchard. The owners happened to have been My Mom and Dad's friends from the military days. Their children and my brothers and I had so much fun picking until our hearts content. Then we had dinner with them. After dinner the folks talked the night away, and us children told ghost stories in a dark room. Spooooky!!!
Have a blessed day. Farmgirl Sister #6701 |
