I know I am really showing my age here, but don't you just enjoy ordinary days?
A few years ago Hallmark had a movie on television titled "The Magic of Ordinary Days." I instantly fell in love with the title and enjoyed the movie as well.
So ladies, what ordinary day do you enjoy? To me there is nothing better than a pot of soup simmering on the stove, me in my easy chair with some handwork in my lap or sitting at the sewing machine. I love it when the house is quiet and you can hear all of the outside noises.
I have to agree, there is a magic in an orinary day.

I'm going to check the library and see if I can find the movie. It sounds great and I usually love all the Hallmark movies. I love lazy weekend mornings with my husband laying in bed reading the paper and drinking coffee. He usually them makes me breakfast. I love walking my dog when the fall leaves are out. We have a small sailboat and I love it when the weather is warm and we are out reading a book and watch the wildlife. Quiet time working in the garden.

Kathy, I completely agree with you.
Life's real measure is in the exquisite beauty of "the ordinary day" - the place where real living happens. It is not until something bad happens that we really see the treasure of each so-called "ordinary" day. I think living close to the land really helps to instill that in folks.... just being able to be outside amidst the beauty of nature. Doing everyday chores. No wonder "country people" have a tradition of not craving after the material goods & fast lifestyle of the city. |

I especially enjoy an ordinary day following a period of errands to run, appointments to keep, etc. I like the gentle rainy days when I can be on the porch, reading or sewing, or the frosty days when I'm snuggled in my favorite chair with a quilt covering and a good book. Chocolate helps as well!
I love cooking, baking especially, and the wonderful smells that waft through the house. I love the feeling that the house practically beams with approval following a cleaning session. I think when we can appreciate the joys of the simple comforts of life, the extraordinary times are that much more special.

A P.S. to my previous post....this past summer, our power was out for five days following a nasty storm. The summer heat was not too bad, so the situation was tolerable. What I truly enjoyed was the interaction with my neighbors. Without the windows closed and AC constantly running, people spent more time sitting on their porch steps, more time visiting. My neighbor came over one evening, and we sat on the porch with only the light from the moon and some candles and talked till way past my bedtime!
As soon as the power returned, the windows closed and everything went back to "normal." I think that was more distressing than the power outage itself.
I'd get a face lift - but then it wouldn't match my body! |

Sounds good to me!! Haven't had one of those in awhile. Been working a lot lately! Can't pass up the extra $, but the body sure does pay. An ordinary day is just what I need! Just being home & not getting out of pj's is an ordinary day for me. Can do what I want & not have to be in a rush to do anything. Thanks for getting me ready for my weekend! It will be nice & cold here. While the 20's arent cold compared to what others have, it is the coldest it has been here this "winter". Finally winter!

Ordinary days are my favorites. Being home,baking, doing laundry, sewing or knitting, making dinner, mopping the floors- I love all of that. I call it quiet productivity. I think that is what "home" is all about.

Me too - being able to be home is enough to satisfy me. I love the days when I have nothing pressing and I can just putter. Put on my pretty apron, sweep, shake the rugs, cut out a pattern, put on a movie (Pride and Prejudice, 1900 House, Pioneer Quest..) have afternoon tea, fall asleep on freshly laundered sheets. *sigh* And I don't have to work tomorrow, so ordinary day here I come! Yay!

Meggie...are you talking about the shows that were on PBS? 1900 House and Pioneer Quest and are they out on video? If they are the ones I'm thinking of, I LOVED them! Let me know.

I have been very blessed to spend most of my days as an adult in these "ordinary" ways.
Has anyone seen the play "Our Town" by Thorton Wilder? The young heroine, Emily, dies during childbirth. She makes a wish to revisit one ordinary "unimportant" day in her own life. When her wish is granted, she is overwhelmed and says " I didn't realize all that was going on and we never noticed..."
Don't forget to take joy in these ordinary days!

Yes, I am. Aren't they great? Those 2 series are my favourite! I watched them on History Television up here. I'm a baddie and taped them all off the tv years ago when they were on. I'm not sure about the Canadian Quests (Pioneer Quest, Quest for the Sea, Quest for the Bay, Klondike..etc.)I don't think they are availible on DVD, I'm not sure why not. But the British House series (1900, 1940s, Regency House Party, Manor House..) are all availible on DVD and most are listed on Amazon.com. If not try ebay - just make sure you get the N. American DVD version, not the one for uk dvd players. (Almost made that mistake! Oops.)

I once saw a sign on a door of a business that said,
"ON THIS DAY, NOTHING HAPPENED."
I praise God for days where nothing happens (especially with 3 boys!), those are ordinary days. And like so many others, I just love being here at home with those boys.

Vanessa, I had a similar sign...in my area, there are many historical homes and many folks are almost snooty about their renovations and restorations. So, the brass sign hanging on the front of my merely 30 year old ranch house read, "on this day in 1897, nothing happened."

| I had to chuckle as an ordinary day for me is anything but quiet or peacefull..LOL. I have four children and hubby is always on the move. However, on the rare occasion when everyone is happy and at peace without some place elese to be there is joy. |

There really is something charming, reassuring and beautiful about the rhythm of an "ordinary day," isn't there? Something so satisfying about an ordinary day well lived. Most of my days are "ordinary," but within that ordinary framework are a million, of not more, unique and amazing moments - seeing my little one smile so big that his pacifier falls out, kicking the snow that's so cold and dry it just puffs out like powder under my feet, warming my hands by the wood stove while holding both of my boys, an impromptu tickle-fest - all of these things ordinary, and wonderful... Thanks for the reminder to pay attention!!!

I am having an ordinary day today!! Still in my pjs and cleaning the kitchen (did other rooms during the week). I have a radio station on that sounds like something from the 1940s!! and I am cleaning the tops of the cabinets, tossing stuff and cleaning like crazy. Then I take a tea break and see what you are all up to.
I have a stew in the crock pot and pretty soon my hubby will want to go for a walk around the wildlife refuge a few miles away. It's kind of rainy too so we will put on a movie later on before dinner and probably sit by the woodstove to eat stew. It's like heaven.

We had a total ordinary do so far today. no one has gotten out of the pjs. we have had a lot of bowls of soup all day. we watched the movie "A Prairie Home Companion" Now Rob is outside, the babes are both asleep and I am eating more soup, IM-ing with a friend, listening to "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" and goofing around on the net. ahhhh Sunday.
