Each month a new block (or more) will be posted and a new thread will begin for each new month. I hope many of you will join in and we will have a lot of new quilts in 12 months or less.

You can join in at any time. We'd love to have you!

This month 4 blocks are here, but you can do one or none of them. Your choice. These blocks will be yours, so choose your fabrics and quilt away.

*****************************************

I am posting the September blocks a bit early because I am going out of town and may not have access to Internet.

This month Julie (Nikki's Mom) chose our block(s) for September. You can either do one or more of them. Both blocks have been around for a long time. She originally chose 2 other blocks and I will call them this month's Challenge Blocks. Challenge blocks have more pieces and seams, and therefore are a bit tougher for beginning quilters.

Remember to always use scant 1/4" seams when making these blocks.

For the beginner quilters she chose Woven Ribbons, one that is very easy, and looks great. This will work very easily with stripes and plaids. There are no triangles in this block - it is very easy.
Here is the link:
http://www.quilterscache.com/W/WovenRibbonsBlock.html

And the other block is called Bear Tracks.
http://www.quilterscache.com/B/BearTracksBlock.html

Helpful Hints for Woven Ribbons:
No triangles. The pattern doesn't say clearly, but the 4 "ribbon" pieces are 10" x 3-1/2". You can make the 10" length a tad longer to be sure both pieces, when cut, are the correct size. Then they are cut into a 3-1/2" square and a 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" piece.

Helpful hints for Bear Tracks:
This block is similar to those we have done with half-square triangles. The pattern says to cut the squares in half diagonally, but I suggest you make the half-square triangles as we have done on a couple patterns so far. You can cut 3" squares of each of the fabrics you use instead of 2-7/8" and do not cut into triangles. Draw a line down center of one of the 3" squares for each pair and stitch two squares together using a scant 1/4" on each side of that line, and then cut on the drawn line. After the half-square triangle squares are pressed, square them up to 2-1/2" to go around the larger square.

The challenge blocks are Rocky Road to Dublin
http://www.quilterscache.com/R/RockyRoadtoDublinBlock.html
and
Wampum Block
http://www.quilterscache.com/W/WampumBlock.html

Julie's comment on why she chose these blocks was: I have chosen two blocks: Wampum Block (for my nod to my Huron heritage) and Rocky Road to Dublin (a nod to my Irish heritage).
What a super way to choose blocks with a special meaning to you.

Both these blocks use more triangles but be careful - not all are sewn together in half-square-triangle blocks. Layout the pieces before sewing because sometimes these blocks can be tricky.

Your blocks should measure 12-1/2" square when finished.

As always, have fun with these blocks and please post your blocks so we can all see what fabrics you are using. It is amazing that a different fabric choice or placement of light-dark fabrics can often really change the look of the blocks.

If you have any questions about the instructions, please ask here or email me and I will try to help you.

Here are my versions of the first two blocks. As you can see - stripes and plaid fabrics work well due to having no triangles. You do need to be careful to cut them straight with the design of the fabric.

Aren't these blocks FUN? I can't wait to see the quilts, wall hangings, or table runners made with these squares. Since you can make as many or as few of the blocks as you want, the sky is the limit to what we can make.

The challenge blocks are fun, too. A bit more difficult, but who doesn't enjoy a challenge?

It is so nice to have a long weekend and to be home. Thanks Judith, I love the variety and getting out of my comfort zone to learn something new. So here are the first two, on to the others.

My bear paw is a little wonky.

I have done that many times. Some blocks have a learning curve. Have you ironed it? It may flatten it out if you iron it. Check and make sure all your seams are 1/4-inch; you may only have to take apart some of it and not all of it.

I made a Bear Paw Quilt about 20 years ago for a cousin. I can't tell you how many times I tore those blocks apart :( Finally came together and turned out wonderful. Anxious to make this one. Great choices.

Good points Linda, I will check when I take it apart. I did iron. Hmmmm....if I don't fix it, I forever will gravitate to it.

Put together my Bear Tracks today. It's a tad wrinkly but I'll use it anyway.

Sewed my Woven Ribbons today. I'm not good at the "scant" 1/4". So my blocks are all 12".
I'm liking my blocks...just picking whatever fabric grabs my fancy for the day. It's going to be eclectic :)

Your block looks great, Christy! Your "woven ribbon" pattern really shows up with those fabrics!
