Reading up on cold brew coffee and would like to hear the pros & cons to it. I had to give up hot coffee over a year ago because it bothered my digestive track. I miss my morning cup so I am hoping cold brew would be milder.

Sara, I think Folgers makes a coffee that is supposed to be better for sensitive stomachs. It says so on the label. Have you tried that? Also, if you look for blends that are considered "light roast", you might find it works better too. I know Starbucks makes a light roast called Veranda (I think that is right, but look on the labels) and one other light roast whose name I can't think of at the moment. It might be that the medium, regular and darker roasts are more problematic. Also, you might try mixing the coffee as half coffee and half hot milk like the French do for morning breakfast. The call it cafe au lait, If you are lactose intolerant, just use lactose free milk or non dairy half and half. I know how wonderful that morning cup of Java can be. I hope these suggestions might prove useful and let us know if you find a successful strategy!

Sara, I just thought of one more thing. The Caffeine in regular coffee is a known irritant to people with stomach issues. Have you tried using Decaf coffee instead? Again, if you use Decaf, try to get as light a roast as possible and stay away from the darker roasts.

Thanks Winnie. I didn't start drinking coffee unto I was in my sixties. Before than it was iced or hot tea for me. But now I'm fussy about my coffee. My coffee of choice is Forger's French Roast with a tsp of sugar. I guess if I can't have what I want I will continue to enjoy my morning tea. I still want to find out if cold brewing Forger's French Roast will mellow it enough for me to be able to have it.

CeeJay, I'm with you on a strong cup of coffee. QVC has a cold brew coffee maker on sale and I am still 'brewing' over to get it or not. It can also be used for cold brew tea so if the coffee doesn't work for me I can still use it for tea.

Girls, let me join in that I love me some dark road strong coffee!! Deejay, I agree that Starbuck's Pike Place is a great daily blend for a good cup of coffee. I have to drink Decaf due to a heart condition and Pike's comes in decaf if you buy it at Starbucks. I also love, love Peets Major Dickinson in decaf. Ohh, nice and dark, spicy and delicious!! Did you all know that Peets, which is out of San Francisco, was around before Starbuck's? Yep, and still going strong. Try the Peets when it goes on sale and see what you think.
Sara, let us know if you perches the cold brew coffee maker. That technique is new to me and I am interested if it works for you.

Thanks Lisa, I checked it out and a much better deal than QVC so I ordered it. I don't always think of Amazon.
Winnie and Lisa it should be here in ten days and I will let you know what I think of it.

Enjoyed my first cup of cold brewed coffee this morning. I used Forger's French Roast and it was smooth and tasty. I will have to have it several mornings in a row before I know if I can have it on a regular basis or not.
I have 1 qt and 1 pint of the brewed coffee in refrigerator. It will keep up to 2 weeks. I used 1 cup of the brewed coffee to 3 cups of boiling water and 3 tsp of sugar. I like that blend.

I hope this one works for you, Sara. let us know what happens. I was in Starbucks today and they are offering cold brew coffee as iced. I might have to try some if they offer it in decaf.

I was having trouble with the acid in coffee, too. I happened to mention it to a friend who said she had cold-brew at home. She sent me over a jar of it to try and it was a revelation! I am going to try to make my own, as well. I saw several recipes online that said to use 1 part ground coffee to 8 parts water. Let it sit and steep for 18 hours, then run it through a filter a couple of times. My friend was using decaf. I am going to make a batch tonight with whatever coffee is sitting at home -- can't hurt!

Marilyn let us know how you like it.
I'm still drinking it but today the acid started to bother me so tomorrow I will cut the brewed coffee and add more water. I hope that will do it because I have enjoyed having my morning cup of coffee. The only thing missing is that smell of brewing coffee. For me half of enjoying coffee is that wonderful smell.

Sara -- I think the smell is what gets me going, too. I went home last night all psyched up to get the cold brew on. Reached up into the cupboard to get the coffee down and there was about enough in the canister to cover the bottom!!! (Of the canister, not my bottom! ha ha ha That would have been a great plenty) So....I guess I will have to buy a little coffee just for the purpose. It will probably be better with fresh grounds, anyway. I had a nice cup of black tea when I went uptown to do the banking this morning, though, and that was good.
As an aside, I have been on WW and am making some big changes to my habits, including the 2 sugars and heavy cream in the coffee. So far, I have lost 4.8 pounds -- still in that "honeymoon" stage, but it's nice to get off to a good start! And it's better than gaining 4.8.

Marilyn way to go with weight loss!
Cut cold brew coffee down by a 1/4 of cup and used same amount of hot water. A milder cup but still strong enough coffee for my liking. Hope this blend works for me. Starbuck coffee on sale today so I splurged and got a pkg.

The Starbuck coffee I bought isn't good for cold brew. The ground is too fine and clogs the filter. Instructions said if filter is clogged use flat tip of bread knife to scrape the filter. Too much work and takes forever for it to drain. The coffee was good but no better than Forger's French Roast. In the future when I want to try other coffees I will go to our coffee shop and see what they have for cold brew. Instructions recommends using a ground for French press.

I still can't drink coffee everyday but I do enjoy a cup now and then. I have a new recipe which I really like. It's from "The American Test Kitchen DIY" cookbook. It makes less coffee and is more straightforward in it's directions. I have enough for a couple of cups this morning and another later in the week.

I am happy to hear that you have found a solution for enjoying a cup of coffee every now and then. Your determination looks like it is paying off for you. I especially love a cup of coffee when it is cold outside or when I just want to sit and read a book or knit.
