My son has been swimming since he was a baby and has been taking it seriously over the past 2 years. He really, REALLY, really loves it...so much so, that he has asked me to sell his Legos for lessons. Not that we need too but I think this show a quality I don't see in other swimmers I meet. He has been watching the Olympics with great fascination and analyzes all their moves and strokes.
So I am really considering making some significant changes to let him chase his dream of swimming. I feel like I don't get much support from other parents or people, who just don't understand. I won't push him to the point of making him feel bad to force him to do it but I definitely don't think I will have too. I know there will be those moments.
And this is the kiddo that asks for nothing. He is always generous and never wants for anything, until it has come to swimming. We have tried other sports and he keeps coming back to swimming.
So do we go for it?

Here is my two cents... let him follow his dreams!!! If he starts taking lessons, and has the potential to become a professional, the coaches should identify it and talk with you about it.... but if it were me, I would take that first step, sign him up for lessons, and see where it goes!

He is in lessons and doing very well. He had the eyes of the high school coach on him already. He is 10 now. LOL

I think if he keeps showing interest then I would continue to give him as many opportunities as I could. The only thing I don't like is when it becomes everything. If it's forced on children they tend to withdraw and begin to hate something they once loved. Let him lead the way to his dreams! Sounds like he already has an amazing talent. Good luck!
