Hi all--
We have recycling pick-up once a week, every Wednesday. I recycle just about everything in our house that I can (and I mean everything), so I seem to have a great amount and it doesn't fit in their silly little bin that they gave us. I used to have a great hanging rubbermaid basket-container that I would lug to the street lined with a large plastic bag full of the recycling, but the last driver took the container with the recycling (idiot!), so I'm kindof out of ideas and I'm ending up with lots of individual brown grocery bags sitting in my kitchen....

What does anyone else do to contain recycling? I guess I could just get a rolling garbage can and spray it a different color or something..

Just think of all of the roads there are...all of the things I haven't seen....yet.

We dont have recycling pick up and so we have three huge garbage bins that we separate our recycling into. I imagine something like that would work for you.

Jonni- Does your district allow the eco-friendly clear pick up bags?
We solved the can problem by lining them with these bags and just lifting it out if we need to refill for overflow. Then you can just take the bags to the curb for p/u and they can see what you have to sort for the truck easily. Lucky you to have weekly pick up, we are every other and sometimes it's tough but I am working hard to recycle, reuse and reduce consumption so I don't need extra cans.

We're pretty lucky, I guess--we also aren't required to separate, which is nice and they take magazines and newspapers, too. Bramble--where do you get these clear bags? That sounds like it might be the way to go if I don't utilize a large rolling container.

I get them at my market and at Home Depot. They are stamped with the recycling # of plastic they are as well, so the whole thing gets recycled. They aren't the best solution but they work for heavy recycle times like the holidays for us.

We have to take ours to the recycling center, we do not have curbside pick-up.

I have a plastic rolling 4 bin system, labeled newspaper & mags, cardboard, plastic, top bin has too recycled plastic bags for tin cans and glass. We also have a big can in the garage for aluminum cans. In the office I have a big bin for shredded office paper.

One of my goals this year is to reduce, reduce, reduce.
So far I can see a big difference, I usually had to take off recycles every other week, I may only have to do it once every 2 months since I have been mindful of what I buy. Cardboard is my largest amount of recycles. [also keep in mind I live in a household of 2]:)

lorij, yup we smash down everything, even the plastic 2 liters, when we occasionally have them.

My daughter and I take anything that is worth money to the recycling center once a month. I have several large trash cans for each type of recyclable. The cans fit nicely in the back of my SUV. She doesn't make much, but every little bit helps.

Would your recycling service give you a second bin? I didn't ask for two, but the recycling service brought me one when I moved in and the people who moved out left the old one behind. When I have an especially large amount (like over the holidays) I can put one full bin out on the porch and start filling the second. I don't know what kind of service you have in your area (ours is included in our city taxes, like the trash) but it might be easier than you'd assume to get more bins. I've also put out overflow recyclables in a cardboard box, so it doesn't matter if they take it with them. But there's a great range of fussiness between one recycling service and another...
