OK,, I really need the motivation to get a handle on my exploding sewing room... Perhaps if I bare and share my 'soul' here with you gals,, it will be the motivation I need to stay on track,,, and also to get my pile of UFO's finished... I have 5 birthday gifts to finish up (already I am making excuses to not tackle my room)... So here we go.. Photo #1 is my main work area...
Photo#2 is just to the right,, w/some projects stacking up... and yes the 3 other sewing machines in the mirror are mine...
photo#3 is my Serger...and it is sitting on top of my vtg.Singer 501 machine cabinet
photo#4 &5 are my fabric stash in the closet... I have everything from Wool, Vintage Bark cloth to stashes for quilting etc...
in the left side is my containers of lace trim, inter-facing, quilt batting, etc.. ,
photo #6 &7 is of my book case,, and I just noticed that the pins came out from under one of my shelves.. hubby just fixed it...
notice my MJF books? My MJF Glamping book is in my trailer...
photo #8 is the 6 bags of fabric and crafting supplies I have decided to donate to our local 'Granny's Club' where the ladies make all kinds of craft goodies from toys, lap quilts and what-not's..
OK, now that I have bared my soul and my sewing room,,, maybe I will be motivated to clean and organize it... or I could just close and lock the door and walk away! snork giggles.... naw,,, I wouldn't do that. Sure wish I had some MJF girl sisters to help me with this mess... I would provide the wine and chocolate... but then we'd probably not get much work done! lolol!

I love to organize this kind of room. Wish you were my neighbor and I could help. The wine and chocolate would help lots. Chuckle!

Grace looks like every other sewing room I have ever seen where the woman gets things done. May look like chaos to others ~ to me it's an explosion of creativity.

Grace your sewing room looks like my craft room. A place where I can create and relax and not worry about everything just let my creativity flow. I have been working slowly on getting my room together. It takes time .

Looks like an artist's studio to me! Sara, your thoughts resonate with mine. Grace, I guess the question is this; can you work efficiently as it is currently set up, or would some rearranging and organizing help you? If you can focus on the work flow, it might be more effective for the time spent. If you work just fine and can find what you want, then maybe it is set up just the way that works for you?

Ooooooohhhhhh! To have a room all of my own for sewing! I currently have a small nook in the bedroom and have to move many items to get to my machine. I have misplaced things and cannot find them. Your room looks great to me.

I'm with Winnie - if it's working for you, just leave it. If not - I read a good idea once about bins for fabric. Uh...measure each piece of fabric. Write on a 3x5 card the measurement, the color, the type of fabric, and "Bin #1". Fold neatly and put in a bin. Repeat. When the bin is full, stick a 3x5 card on the outside that says #1. Stack in closet (or whatever). Repeat as many times as necessary with "Bin #2", etc. Put 3x5 cards in a file box. Alternatively, with this modern technology thing, you could do something similar with a computer file - maybe take a pic of each fabric, tag it with type/measurement/bin #, put in folders on your computer.

I sure wish we were neighbors! I'd love to come help you :) I hope to have a room when we get a new house. Right now my projects end up all over the house! Currently there's been a fabric explosion in the livingroom LOL!!!

It is funny.. I don't have this problem with the rest of the house .... just my sewing room ... I would like to attribute my chaotic mess to an overly creative brain .... or just way to many projects! Lol! I have in the past been able to maintain organization in my sew room... maybe it's an "I am getting older and life is to short" to worry about orga ization... and yet I hate the chaos ... and yet I still go in there and play all day... it hasn't spilled out into the rest of the house and I could close the door.... Oh Wait... I will blame the mess on the Home decor magazines, with their pristine rooms that even Dust Bunniess are not allowed into!
I did read some good tips and thoughts from you gals... Thank you... and the Wine & Chocolate still stands!! Lol!

Too true Grace!! The wine and the chocolate would be a good motivator, I think. I'm not an organizer so when I do get into that mood, it gets very stressful. I feel like letting my daughter loose in there, she loves to organize. But I think I would never find anything again!! I love her but she likes to get rid of things, I tend to hang onto things because the things are associated with someone or a past activity. Example: "mom, why do you keep this (fill in the blank)?" Me: "Well I bought that 15 years ago when Ellen and I went to a craft show and we had such a nice time, blah, blah, blah". You get the idea, luckily she has more patience than her mother.

Grace, I envy your space. I had a sewing room but now everything is shoved into a closet. My brother in law is using the room till he finds a place. It's almost a year since I've had it but now I work on my sewing in the dining room. Hoping and praying for him to find a place soon. I have big plans for the room when it is available again. By the way accountability is a great motivator. Winnie actually helped me through emailing to keep me motivated to get everything organized. I downsized to the things I definitely wanted to keep and get finished. Working on a quilt, for a gift. I've had the fabric for years. Just stick with us we'll keep you going.

ROFLOL it could be my room. I have organized my room numerous times only to do it over again. Seems like some gremlin comes in during the night and wrecks havoc! I'm coming over, I need your wine and chocolate!

I hate to take pictures of MY sewing areas - yes, areas. I have a small one-room addition that is separate from my 1900s house, and I CALL it my sewing/craft/guest house. However, I feel isolated out there, so I mainly sew in my dining room. Right now, the dining room is clean - because I had to clean it up for BUNCO at my house. But the little house? OMG! Does it need organizational help. Of course, I don't have enough area to display my 24 sewing machines. LOL! When I get back to Texas I will take pictures.

This is exactly how my craft room is! But there are times I feel it's better to just leave it. It may be a mess to the world but I know where things are. So when I decide to organize everything seems to be misplaced. How crazy! If your "mess" works for you then I vote leave it. If you function better with organization then do it!

Darlene... come on over... but don't bring your Gremlins... lol!
Linda ... I am glad to see I am not the only one with a serious sewing machine addiction! Lol!
Krista.... yep... mine is an organized mess... My Happy Place...
I did make a wee bit of headway... got the bags of fabric off to a good home.. and I swapped out the sewing table for a more usable sewing desk with drawers... Taking/making baby steps! Lol!

Grace, Baby steps is the best way to go sometimes. If you get too crazy changing things up then its harder to find them when you need them. Enjoy a little wine and chocolate between sessions of cleaning/organizing....

LOL Denise, great advice!
My sewing studio gets like that too! The remedy is to start picking it up. You'd be amazed how your creativity re-energizes as you pick things up. A little bit at a time. Sometimes for me it's just clearing my cutting table.
I would also suggest that clean out your stash! Life is to short to be working with fabrics that you are no longer passionate about. I clean out my stash at least twice a year and donate the fabrics to organization that make quilts for the less fortunate. Or use it to make quilts to donate. It's a win win situation!
It is also important to note that sometimes not wanting to sew has nothing to do with our room and everything to do with the weather and/or how we feel. Gardening season is in full swing, for those of us that enjoy the outdoors, our sewing/quilting takes the back seat. I know my quilting has .... I want to enjoy the outside and read books! For everything there is a season ....
Good luck!

Carole... oh yah! I went through r a stash of fabric... sorted for keeping, sharing, donating and tossing... yes I got realistic and decided to toss some of the fabric into the cleaning rag pile!
But in all honestly ... I will never part with my vtg Bark cloth fabric... I adore them to much to ever part with.... lol!
