Just picked up my next project. They were at an old Victorian parsonage-apparently the pastor is now in a nursing home at 90 years old. I won the table and 6 ladder-back rush chairs at auction. The chairs are in amazing condition-tight and sound and all but one of the rush seats is intact and sturdy.
But, Boy oh Boy do the seats STINK-![](icons/icon_smile_dead.gif)
I made myself a bucket of soapy warm water (dish soap) and proceeded to wipe down one chair--I came up with a milky-sticky-stinky-cigarette odor that kind of rolled off. I know you are not supposed to get the rush seats wet-but they smell bad. They have a sort of lacquer over the rush, but you can really see years and years and years of dust between the cracks and crevices---What to do?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
