Let's see - my name's Natalie, I live in northern UT. Kinda want a farm but currently renting the upper half of a house with a tiny yard. Joining up to work with other locals to change the city ordinance that says no chickens. Hoping to swing a potted garden this year and looking forward to the farmers market opening here next month. Married, mother of 3 girls, big reader, history geek, goth, witch, farmgirl!

A farmgirl after my heart, I mean, from my home town. Actually, both! Welcome Natalie. I grew up on Grant Street between 4th and 7th. We were allowed animals. We raised chickens, rabbits, and ducks for food, plus we had a large garden and fruit trees. I wonder when they changed the laws to make it illegal because it surely wasn't in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. You might point that out to your city council--how important raising food was in Ogden not so very long ago. There were many gardens and orchards, and yes, backyard chickens. Good luck.

Welcome Natalie! I am from Utah as well!! I too spent a few years living in the same house that my dear aunt MaryJane did when she was a child. Good luck with all your plans for getting chickens and starting a garden! Glad to have another Utah Farmgirl join the group!

Not sure when the laws changed, but they evidently did! And, since you know the area, I'm on 22nd just above Harrison. I'll add that to my list!
And my history geekiness tends toward the Middle Ages/Renaissance, though I'm a fan of the 20s-50s as well.
Thanks for the warm welcome!

Hi Natalie....waving at ya from Evanston, WY. Welcome to Farmgirls! We have that problem here too. I am interested to hear how you go about the fight. :) I'm also a history geek....mostly Pre-1840's Mountain Man Rendezvous. I would love to learn more about the Middle Ages/Renaissance period as well. I have been watching Outlander and reading the books. This has tweeked my interest in Mid 1700's clothing designs. Loving that period. I worked at Fort Bridger for 9 years, so pretty knowledgeable about the 1800's in general.
Anyway, I could go on and on about that stuff. Welcome to the group. I hope you find all you are seeking and a little bit more.

Gosh, that makes us practically neighbors! I've been through Evanston a couple of times, and stopped once for a weekend medieval event at ...the train yard? It was cool.

welcome Natalie, theres no place like home on the farm. hope you get chickens soon. I am by Dallas Tx little town 20 miles south of downtown dallas.
I like the renaissance history too we have a ren fair that is in the area now. scarborough faire runs from april to end of May I go every year have a variety of outfits. have not gone this year first time have missed it in a few years. Had a mild stroke about 3 months ago not walking good yet. I also like civil war era. My son did a Paul Revere character couple years ago for second admendment gun rights event. I had my colonial outfit. I grew up in the Ozarks I guess could like hillbilly history.. ha ha old crafts not done much anymore, grew up with what they call now a "homesteading" lifestyle. I don't have my farm yet but working on it we hope to move one day in near future to maybe 5 acres. soon as I am up and running again. we have a 1/2 acre here and redoing the wallaby barn (disassembeling it and moving to other side of the pen area... not going to be much fun but will be better when finished. one side floods worse when we get lot of rain than the other, and redo pens once that is done will see where a garden will fit in the picture. I have one sweet chicken "gabby" lost her two sisters recently but she is doing good. hope to get more chickens soon to keep her company. have 1 llama he is a good boy loves his job guarding.

So I guess the chicken thing changed in the last 20 years. In 1998, someone called the city to find out about keeping rabbits and chickens and found there was no info one way or the other about animals other than cats and dogs. Sort of a "we don't care unless your neighbors complain". At some point, though, some people tried to get a more formal "chickens are legal" statute put through and it backfired. The city council instead wrote in a BAN on chickens. Word is one of them grew up next to a chicken farm and based her decision on that. Or something. One of the commenters stated "I don't want your chickens keeping me up at night". So there you are. There is a local group pushing for them to be allowed again, I just found them a couple of weeks ago. Still don't know if *I* could have them, cuz I am renting and only have a small yard area, but it would be nice to have the option.
