"This is an essay about a different kind of courage. I could look around and find courageous people who have been sick like my Pop Pop or Gram, I could look at my friend's Dad who is a policeman, I could also find courage riding on a fire truck or in the operating room of a hospital. I guess most people think of soldiers as full of courage as they carry out their jobs in the military. Today I met courage in the face of Miss Sally who asked me to not forget to put a flag on her brother's grave when my scout troop was placing flags before the annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony. I told her I wouldn't and continued on with my job. When I got to the marker ,it was the first time I had really looked at it and read the information. I saw that he had been 19 years old when he died and had been serving in the military during WWII. I tried to think what it must have been like for their family to know this brother, son, grandson would not be coming home to them to live his life because he had believed he had a duty to his country. Courage what was it took to go, courage was what it took to stay, and with courage and honor he sacrificed his life.
I thought about Miss Sally who has had the courage all these years to remember and not let us forget that people, real people who were loved and missed paid a terrible cost so that freedom in the face of evil could triumph. After the others have gone and I am still here,
I will remember. I will remember".
