Hello from the far north! Though a foot of snow has fallen today I have been holed up reading about gardens, periodically wandering outside to shovel snow onto my flower beds. I live in Anchorage, Alaska, with my husband, our 20 month old son, a Saint Bernard, and two cats. I wouldn't say I'm too much of a farmgirl but we have been heading toward simple living, organic foods, etc. and are relatively outdoorsy. I stumbled across the cooking issue at my sister-in-law's house and within a week got some budget mixes. Then I ordered the book. Yesterday I ordered a calendar and more back issues. I'm perusing things slowly, fitting in and trying on new ideas when time allows. I teach high school English full-time and lead a small babywearing nonprofit group. Between all of that and our one year old, phew! I'm glad it is still winter vacation!
I'm looking forward to getting to know you all!

Welcome Larissa! You'll find a lot of us share your interests. Living in Anchorage sounds exciting. I plan to visit Alaska in a few years, when my 3.5 year old isn't such a handful. Enjoy your vacation break. You sound like one busy lady!

Hi, Larissa,
Alaska sounds beautiful...and cold. High school English is a wonderful thing. My 15 year old Soph. has a wonderful English teacher who is truly preparing them for college. She is really beginning to appreciate her! English was/is one of my favorite subjects. Welcome to the forum. You'll enjoy your time here.

Hi Larissa and welcome! Jump in and ask whatever, someone is sure to answer! We are a fun and caring group with a great bunch of ladies. I am ever curious and a wee bit naughty( as you will find out...) so what is a" nonprofit baby wearing group"? I have a 13 month old and a 13 year old and have no desire to wear either of them for profit or not! Can't say I've heard that term before! Welcome to the farm!

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm looking forward to meeting you Jo.
The babywearing group is part of Nine In Nine Out (nino.org) and I also have a babywearing business www.mckinleykid.com. I guess babywearing is a "thing" or an aspect of attachment parenting but I started for convenience and because our son was colicky. Dr. Sears recommends it, as does the book The Happiest Baby on the Block and likely many others I just can't think of right now! Basically, you are strollerless, no more crying baby, and lots of snuggle time. When he was little I found it relaxing for me too. Now with my 20 month old it helps him sleep when he's too wound up (like today since my parents have been in town) and is also way more convenient. We get lots of hiking, gardening, shopping, etc. done with him. Does that help?

Larissa- Silly me! I have "worn" both babies myself! Yes the sling is wonderful but I have two very curious George's so they didn't stay in it long! I just didn't think of it in terms of a business! Chalk it up to late night and the grey matter slowly fizzling! Have fun getting to know everyone!

Wecome Larissa - I am excited to have someone from Anchorage. I have been toying with the idea of moving and Anchorage is on the list. I would love to talk about the area of site. As for being strollerless I did that 23 years ago with my first son and I must say I really think it helped him. He was unable to sleep for more then 20 minutes at a time and later he was labeled ADHD. We did not follow the party line from books, doctors and teachers but rather I listened to my inner voice. If you met Nick you would never guess that he was ADHD. Many countries carry their babies almost everywhere and they do not see some of the issues we have with our children. For the first two years he loved being carried in a backpack and now he spends every waking moment with a backpack on his back. Both of my boys where not in strollers and now that they are young men they are the most independent, free spirited, compassionate young men and that is not my words but rather those who spend the day with them. A big thumbs up for you and your child with thank you for it later. We have been trying to dig out here in Colorado and expecting another storm in Friday. Who wished so hard for a White Christmas? Welcome

Welcome, Larissa. I'm glad you're happy with your snow. We haven't had any here in Louisville, KY so far and that has made me very happy! :D This forum is a wonderful place, and I know you're going to love it here.

Welcome Larissa, You are going to fit right in here, I can already tell you have the farmgirl mentality. I will warn you, it becomes addictive and when you go away it's like you miss all your sisters. I've been away for a couple weeks and am enjoying catching up with everybody. I just love these farmgals, you will too!!! Kel |

Hello Larissa and welcome! I think you will feel right at home at this sight! Sounds like you have lots incommon with everyone!
My brother and sister inlaw both worked to the school system in Anchorage, ever heard the last name Clyne? They are both retired now and live in Homer.
At any rate, glad you're here! Cindy

Hi Cindy! Did your brother and sister-in-law recently sell a Volkswagen camper van?
Kel- I think I'm half farmgirl and half citygirl. That pretty much just makes me stuck in the 'burbs forever, doesn't it?
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I'm enjoying it here!

Larissa, not that I know of...will have to ask. Sister-in-law was a principal at an elementary school for years and my brother was a psychologist for the school dist. I was just throwing that out there, you never know!
Glad you feel at home here! Cindy |
