Hey ladies!
My name is Rachel, I live in a suburb of Indianapolis and have been interested for quite a while in self-sufficient and green living. I'm a dedicated crafter, a novice gardener, and lifelong learner, so I think this will be a wonderful community to be a part of!
I'm also very interested in beekeeping and hope to have a hive or two myself someday. Unfortunately I am not on a lot of land and have a couple outdoor dogs, so bees is probably the only animal I could "keep"!
I hope to be joining you all very soon as a legit farmgirl, just gotta wait for my next payday :) |

Were you able to start your garden yet? What are you planting this year? |

I have! When it was cooler out I put in some spinach and lettuce, which gave me a few good salads, and now I have in the ground some tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers that I started from seed, radishes, carrots, and some beans. I'm also trying to propagate potatoes and garlic from kitchen scraps, so far so good! This weekend I'll be building a fence around it because my dog keeps walking through. There's no hiding those paw prints!
Last fall I put in some more flowering plants in our front bed for the bees and butterflies. I have lavender, hyssop, astilbe, columbine, and coneflower coming up now, among others. |

welcome Rachel glad to have you join us! will enjoy hearing about your garden I had hoped to get one in this year but will have to wait got other projects in works. bee keeping I think that is awesome hope you will get it established sometime soon and do well. Your herbs sound wonderful. once I get the wallaby pens and barn redone will plant herbs in there for them. I used to have a pretty fair herb patch time to reestablish one. I put out some garlic in a big pot recently and one day realized something had dug it up!! I have a rabbit outback and squirrels not sure what else wanted the garlic

Welcome Rachel! Glad to have you join us! Your garden sounds great. I have a problem with one of my dogs getting into my tomato plants, so I have to watch them carefully. Hopefully one day you can get you some bees!

Last year I start doing some composting, and I had enough by this year to incorporate it into my garden soil. We have two labs, and unfortunately one of my labs is extremely interested in the kitchen scrap portion of the compost, and takes every opportunity he gets to go eat off the pile. Having it mixed in with the soil only helps somewhat, I have busted him a couple times trying to get little bits of it out of the garden. Fortunately the other lab has shown no interest in eating it or I'd be in real trouble!
This weekend will be partially dedicated to my putting up a fence out of something like chicken wire to hopefully protect my poor plants. |

I'm in Carmel, and my dad lives just north of Nashville- I go down there about once a month! If there's ever anything going on down there I'd be happy to make a trip down!
