I recently finished Lost in the Beehive. It was very good. Now I'm reading The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.
I also recently read Women at Play which I saw recommended in the last issue of MaryJane's Farm. I loved the concept of making exercise fun by going outdoors and doing the kinds of things we did as kids. I'm ready to put it into practice!

I'm reading the Monica Ferris books. Her main character is the owner of a needlework shop in Excelsior, MN and is a bit of a sleuth. Each book has a needlework pattern in the back. I just read the first book called Crewel World. I will be reading all of them.

I am reading non-fiction- "The Nature Fix" with a subtitle "Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier and More Creative". It describes the benefits of getting out in nature. I learned that just 5 hours in a natural setting has stress relieving properties that can last up to a month.

Hi Sisters, After seeing the movie Queen of the Desert staring Nicole Kidman I became intrigued with the life of Gertrude Bell (1868-1926),which the movie is based on. So I have been reading, Gertrude Bell Complete Letters Volume I and II, The Desert and the Sown: Travels in Palestine and Syria by Gertrude Bell and an in-depth analysis and study of her by Georgina Howell titled Gertrude Bell: Queen of the Desert, Shaper of Nations. Rent the movie and you too will be intrigued. Who knew?

I just finished an excellent book called, "The Lido" by new British author, Libby Page. The book is about a unique friendship between an 87 year old lady and a 26 year old young woman. They meet while trying to save their local swimming pool that has been around since 1938. The story was really beautifully written, it made me laugh and cry. I really recommend this very touching book! Hope your libraries have it!

I finished the Nightingale. It was wonderful. Now I'm reading Crazy Rich Asians (hilarious!) by Kevin Kwan and Return of the Heroine by Kaye Michelle. Kaye is a local author. I've been in contact with her recently. She may join the writing group that meets weekly at my house. I would love that! I've only just started her book, but so far it's very good.

My latest reads are: The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens (excellent book!), Carnegie's Maid by Marie Benedict (very good), Vox by Christina Dalcher (pretty good), The Return of the Heroine by Kaye Michelle (very good), and the Nightingale by Kristin Hannah (excellent!). Right now I'm reading The Reckoning by Sharon Kay Penman and Escape from Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West by Blaine Harden.

I recently finished The Reckoning by Sharon Kay Penman. What I didn't realize until I finsihed was that it was the last book in a trilogy and I hadn't read the first two! That explains why I was a little confused here and there. Overall, though it could stand on it's own and was an excellent read. I will definitely read the first two. I was also excited to see that Penman has a new book coming out soon, The Land Beyond the Sea. I can't wait to read it.
Escape from Camp 14 was a real eye-opener! I had not previously known about the labor camps in North Korea and how horrible they are. According to the author, the existence of the camps are officially denied by the North Korean government but can be plainly seen on Google Earth. The book is the memoir of the only person known to have escaped from this particular camp, one of the worst. Since he was born in the camp he knew of no other life until a new prisoner started telling him about the world outside the camp. He made a bold and daring escape, traveled to China then eventually South Korea and America. Now he works for a human rights organization and splits his time between California and South Korea. His story is gripping, appalling, and hopeful all at the same time. It left me wondering how he is doing now. He was able to physically escape the camp, but was left with PTSD and a pretty nasty form of survivor guilt from being the only person to ever escape. His mother and brother had attempted it earlier, were captured and executed. He and his father had been tortured to find out if they knew anything about the planned escape and he always worried that after his own escape his father may have been tortured again and possibly executed, but he will never know. This book tells a lot about not only the labor camps, but life in general for almost all North Koreans. As one of the chapters is titled, it's "nothing to envy."
I also just finished Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield. It's part magical realism, part historical fiction, and part mystery. I loved the lyrical flow of the writing and found the story fascinating.
Right now I'm reading Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng and Sisters of Prophecy by Jude Pittman and Gail Roughton.

I have been fortunate enough to read many wonderful books this winter. Two stand out because of their superb stories that made me smile, think, laugh and cry. Both books were the authors first ones, "The Lido" by Libby Page (England) and "The Red Address Book" by Sofia Lundberg (Sweden).
I hope you can find these books at your library. They tell the story of elderly women who's life stories are told and entwined with the young women who become a part of their life. Please take the time out to look them up! Both authors are amazing and I hope their next books will come out soon.

| All of Barbara Kingsolver books are compelling. I am particularly drawn to The Poisonwood Bible, bit all of her reads are worth it. |

Nora I love the Greenvalley book fair. I always go there when I visit my daughter in Virginia. Last time I wished I had an extra suitcase!
Right now I'm reading Lost Roses by Martha Hall Kelly. A gift from my kids. Enjoying it so far.
