The author is Diana Gabaldon. There is a TV series based on the books on Starz. https://www.starz.com/video/6dd18f29a87b4d3188e9963c7bf68e67 It is really good, but is rated R for good reason. Lots of very good acting, though. Many of the actors were nominated for Golden Globes. Doesn't hurt that there are cute men riding horses in kilts, talking in Scottish accents. Worth a watch. :)
I also love just about anything by Sharyn McCrumb. She has written a series "The Ballad Novels" set in the Appalachian Mountains. Following a trip through the Appalachian Mountains I happened upon Sharyn's books and thought "I had died and gone to Heaven". She wrights about the legends, geography and "contemporary issues" of Appalacia. Each Ballad novel centers on a historical event from North Carolina. The first novel in this series is If Ever I Return, Pretty Peggy-O I was hooked from then on. Sharyn has many other novels and I have read them all. Yes, I belong to her fan club and read her newsletters.
One of our own FarmGirls (Cherime MacFarlane) has a historical fiction series The McGrough Clan. I've read all of those too and loved them. She has a facebook page. We haven't heard from her in a while. She may be off researching a new book.
I am currently reading All The Stars In The Heavens by Adriana Trigiani. This is a NOOK low price special. It sounded vaguely familiar and I was looking for something distracting. I have always admired Loretta Young's acting. (I thought my mom looked like her. Ha!) Anyway, it is a much better book than I thought it would be and I recommend it. This author also wrote The Shoemaker's Daughter which I have not read; but, plan to. Happy reading.

Sherone, I started to watch that series recently, with my 14 yo daughter!! :O We turned it off pretty quick. If I ever get a chance to watch on my own I may. I wish they would leave some of that out! The storyline sounds awesome!

I have been reading "Because it is Bitter, and Because it is My Heart" by Joyce Carol Oates. I like literary fiction and this is the first book by her that i've read. i like it. I tried reading a couple of books by Jane Smiley, even met her, but i couldn't get into her books. I did read a YA novel, "Where Things Come Back", a powerful but very sad story. I have a to read list which I am constantly adding to. And I've read some books of poetry and/or essays by Mary Oliver and Wendell Berry. I read books that inspire me to keep writing my stories. In short, any good book that moves me. Cindy

Any series of books by "Lauraine Snelling". Red River of the North series is excellent! It's about families who emigrated to The Dakota's to homestead. It's all about there struggles and the way they lived & died & worked & rejoiced in the little pleasures.

I just wrote a post about my Outlander addiction on my blog. It gives you all the links to buy the books on Amazon. http://annapearlsattic.blogspot.com/2016/05/new-obsession-outlander-on-starz.html Also, you can try the Library. The books have been out for awhile and are very popular right now. Our library just laughed at me when I asked to be on the waiting list. Don't blame me for your addiction. After reading my post, you have been fairly warned. (Btw, the post was written in a Scottish accent> :)
I have also been reading the Red River of the North series by Lauraine Snelling - I'm on the 4th book in the series. I seem to like to have several books open at once so I am also in the midst of reading Gaia's Garden by Toby Hemenway and House of Rain by Craig Childs. Other favorites I finished recently are Wild by Cheryl Strayed and The Necessity of Empty Places by Paul Gruchow. They are all great reads!
Right now I'm reading a couple. The Church of Mercy by Pope Francis and Divine Mercy for Moms sharing the lessons of St. Faustina. I also have a book about homeschooling going on my e-reader.
Having multiple books going is like watching multiple TV shows :)

DandeeRose Are you reading the original series or the new ones that the tv shows are based on? I loved the original ones, in fact enjoyed all her books.

I know it is really different from the books, like it, but really liked the books. My first Jeanette Oke book was The calling of Emily Evans, fell in love with all her books after that!

I just finished I finished a wonderful book called "On Little Wings" by Regina Sirois. I loved it. it's her first book and I hope she writes more. Here's a write up. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13409474-on-little-wings. I just started "The Mercy" by Beverly Lewis. I've noticed that many Farmgirls enjoy Amish fiction and wanted to try one. So far I'm really enjoying it. And now you girls have gotten me interested in Outlander!

Just read "The Keeper of Lime Rock" by Lenore Skomal. It's a true story about Ida Lewis America's most celebrated Lighthouse Keeper. Interesting history!
Now I'm finally reading "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens. Should have read it 50 years ago for high school English class, but didn't. I have kept my copy of all these years. Somehow I passed the course though. Asked my sister if she read it and she said "No, I took an e and didn't care." My brother didn't read it either. Haven't asked my other brother, but something tells me he skipped reading it also. Guess it was a lost cause on all of us. LOL
I an enjoying it now though! "Outlander" just might have to try and find that series also. Everyone seems to be having fun reading it.
