| I just ordered a lot of seeds off of eBay for Moon Flowers. The picture looked so pretty and I am planning to plant a big variety of flowers around our house this year because we are going to list it for sale in late summer, and I want it to look very pretty. Anyway I just read that moon flowers are poisoness, does anyone have suggestions or know anything about these flowers/plants? I have an in/out cat and 2 kids, who will be 3 + 5 this Spring. DH thinks that I can spray them with the bitter spray that is supposed to keep pets away and our cat won't bug it, but I worry about the kids picking the flowers and ingesting something toxic. I need a little advice ladies!! Any would be appreciated. Thanks |

Liz, where did you read that they are poisonous? On the package? What is the botanical name as there are different flowers with the same common name. Both Ipomoea and Convolvulus are called Moonflower and they are a non-invasive morning glory type. They are not toxic. Solanum is another one but some of the species are poisonous. So best to find the botanical name and then do a google search and find out. Hope this helps MB

| The auction listed them as moon flower, white angels trumpet, and/or gabriel's trumpet. That is all it has for names, not the actual 'scientific' sounding name. I am waiting to hear back from the seller if it is poisonous or not. I did a Google search on moon flower and one data page that popped up said that they are poisonous, so that got me concerned.....which is why I posted here. I am hoping that someone has experience with this plant, poisonous or not I need some advice on planting and care also. If it is poisonous to pets I will take it to my mom, they have no pets nor want any. Thanks!!! |

There is a lot of plant renaming going on. I've noticed that the last couple years here.
The new "Angels trumpet" is the old datura s. or Jimson weed.

Datura Brugsmansia is also called angels trumpet but I haven't heard it called moonflower. hmmmm.... Things are called different common names in different parts of the country. Funny huh? I guess it could be called moonflower because some varieties are fragrant in the evening.
and all parts are poisonous if ingested. So be careful. MB

Liz- The picture on your item is a bit confusing as the leaves do not look like the traditional moonflower. A moonflower grows on a trailing vine, similar to morning glory. They are not poisonous. Maybe he put the wrong picture? If it is Angel's trumpet (datura), then yes, they are poisonous. However, I have had them in my garden with no ill effects. I think that if you plant it in an out-of-the-way spot and teach your children not to touch it, you will be able to enjoy this beautiful plant. That's what I did with mine, for every plant in the garden. They each now have a healthy knowledge of plants. Your pets should not even bother it- mine never have. Good luck!

I agree with Karin in that the picture and description is misleading. Dature grows into a largeplant with very large flowers. Of course they do start out small. Did you notice the description said to plant in the fall? MB

| That IS datura, I'm 100 percent sure of it. I agree with Karin, it is a beautiful flower that can be safely grown in your garden if you teach your kids not to touch it at all. I always tell the neighbor kids not to pick any flowers in my garden -- if they want a little bouquet, just ask me and we'll pick them together. That way, I can be sure they aren't harvesting poisonous flowers/leaves/berry or picking all of my prize dahlias! |

Liz,
A few years ago I planted this flower. On the package it was called Moonflower. I still have some that come up each year. I have cats and they have not suffered from them. They are pretty and glow in the moonlight.

My grandmother had moonflowers, and they bloomed at night, and they did resemble morning glories and were on a vine type .
The angels trumpet is what they have said above.and it is poison if eaten, they can grow very tall like a tree, they come in yellow,pink and white. there is a purple one that is the datura but the nurseries have told me its not a angle trumpet, but it sure does look like one.If I remember right the moonflowers smelled very good at night.

| Thank you all so much! I am now pretty excited about getting these seeds. My girls are pretty good about staying away from "nasty stuff" as I will tell them about the plants. I think that I will probably plant some in large pots/planters in my front garden, it is fairly small and I don't want it to cover my rose bushes, calla lilies or the cannas. Also that way if the girls do get touchy with them I can move them. Thanks again!! |
