It's interesting,,, it really wasn't all that long ago, and yet for some,,, a life time while for others,,, only a story passed down...
the humble and coveted Flour Sack... (also known as Feed Sack")
Mothers, grandmothers, sisters, daughters, etc.. imagining what they could sew from a cloth sack,,, from small sugar sacks to huge flour sacks... 'under-mentionables' blouces/shirts, dresses, curtains, etc were sewn... from those humble sacks...
I would love to come across a small treasure trove of some packed away for a rainy day projects,,, sacks.
I would give anything to find some of these, especially the Scotty dog print!
Imagine, being a teen girl, in Home Ec., class learing to sew,, using fabric from flour sacks.
or being a young housewife on a uber small budget,,, clothing your children in flour sack clothing...
Can you imaging this guy being your brother/son/hubby??? I can hear it now, "Hon, can you keep your eyes open to a small prink floral print for me,,, I want to make Daisey~mae a new sundress."...lol!
Have a Happy Saturday and ... What would you make, if you had a couple of flour sacks at your finger tips?...

Our local flour mill which is still in business, sold flour in those kind of sacks and my mom made clothes for my younger sister and me from them.
I was given some flour sack fabric some years ago and made some WONDERFUL aprons from it. It WOULD be so neat if this was available again today.
Our mill has sacks that have wonderful designs on them for the different varieties of flour they sell, which are beautiful! I've made lots of aprons from those too! There are four different ones. And you can buy just the sacks!

Flour sacks weren't the only source of fabric. I wore clothes made of cloth from chicken feed. I still have a few of the prints. They are such fun, now. Not then. I wanted store-bought clothes. But it was not to be. There are clubs to belong to if you collect this kind of fabric and several books written about them. A fun read.

CeeJay, how do you go about just buying the flour sacks in the four prints offered? Do they have an online store? I would love to have some to make some porch pillow covers.

I have a flour sack apron that CJ made for me awhile back for an apron swap. Just love it. Really would love to have some flour sacks to sew up what ever my heart desires.

Winnie, I can tell you that the RED ROSE design is my very favorite and that is the flour I buy. The most popular one is the BLUE BIRD. . . those sacks come in three sizes. I live near the Navajo Indian reservation and the BLUE BIRD is one that the Navajos use for their sewing projects.
The other two are VALLEY QUEEN (with sheaves of golden wheat) and WHITE ROSE. Very nice bags and I hope you have fun with them.

My mom always had a stash of flour sack fabric in her attic. When I decided at 14 that I wanted to to make a peasant blouse for myself she gave me a piece of red and white gingham. I loved that blouse! Every stitch sewn by hand since she wouldn't let me near her only machine (her treadle). I have a few scraps of her fabric from the early 50's which I treasure.
