On the Hearts #3 Thread, I was asked to post the instructions for using Decorative Paper Napkins to cover wood or papiermâché items.
You will need
Perfect Paper Adhesive sold by USArtQuest www.usartquest.com
A flat paint brush, 1/2" to 1" size works well also sold by USArtQuest.
They are really nice brushes and not too expensive.
A wooden or papiermâché item, my first project was a wooden cigar box. Cigar boxes need to air out for a while. There are Tobacco shops that sell empty boxes quite reasonably. Try something quite flat for the first time. A flat wooden ornament is great to start with.
White or beige acrylic paint
A small container for water and one for the adhesive.
Paper napkins, the ones sold at TJMax, Dollar Tree, party stores, etc. all work well. Whatever appeals to you.
1. Paint the entire item you will be covering with paint. If it has
a hinge, try not to paint it. Let the item dry thoroughly.
2. Decide which napkins you want to use. For a small item one
napkin will work. Cigar boxes use 2 napkins.
Separate the layers of the napkins. Usually there are
3 layers. You will be using only the printed layer.
Keep the plain layers for drying your brush.
3. Cover an area of you item with adhesive and then apply a part
of the napkin you have chosen to use.
Don't use the straight cut edges of the napkins, since they will
not be hidden on the item. Dip your brush into water and go
around the area of the napkin you would like to use. Smaller
areas of the napkin work best. Place on the box already
covered with adhesive and cover with more adhesive. Try not to
use to thick of a layer on the box or the napkin as it will
lift up and not lay flat.
4. Just keep tearing pieces of napkins and covering the item in
the same way until it is all covered. The edges of the torn
napkin will disappear as you work. It is difficult to not cover the hinge on a box, so cover it with the napkin. It will work just fine. Be sure not to let the box close as you let it dry or you will not be able to open it. Try not to build up to much napkin and adhesive around the hinge edge.
5. It is best to place a piece of the napkin into a crease and then flatten out the napkin with your brush and adhesive.
6. The bottom can be covered with plain card stock or felt. Feet can be added if desired. Wooden spools work well on larger papiermâché boxes.
7. Let dry and add any desired embellishments. Decorative pens, glitter, paper flowers, jewels, etc.
8. The glue is sold in both matte and gloss. The gloss is waterproof making it great for a recipe box. A little adhesive goes a long way.
