Hi Everyone!
I have (like most new people) have been reading the forums for a long time. I finally decided to go ahead and join in the conversation. Currently I'm living in Austin TX, BUT we are moving to Michigan very very soon.
I grew up a FARMGIRL in Indiana but decided that I didn't want to live that hard working lifestyle after I finished school. Well, for the last three years my husband and I have been paying off our debts and saving money like crazy people so that we could go back to our roots.
My husband starts a new job in Benton Harbor Michigan in January. Once our house sells I'll be moving with our daughter to the area also. Our dream is to buy 5+ acres within a 45 minute drive to BH. We would also love to be around people who understand our values.
If any of you have any advice for a young family moving to that area please feel free to advise me. Also, if there is a FARMGIRL group in the area I'd LOVE to join you.

Emily, I love your name! My daughter says that she will name her daughter Emily someday. Of course, she's only 21 and doesn't even have a boyfriend at the moment. So, MY Emily is quite far off!

Welcome to the bunch! I'm new here too, but I know you will meet many great gals. One thing I know for sure, they will make you feel right at home!

Hi Emily, Good luck and hope you enjoy this site as much as I do. I remember thinking the same as you, growing up on the farm, that was the last thing you wanted to do. Yes, here I am, best wishes. Michele

Hi Emily! Oh, I love to read about farmgirls going back to their roots! Congratulations on your husband's job in MI (I was born in MI and had family in southeast MI--great memories), and hope your house sells really soon. Welcome!

Thank you everyone for the warm Farmgirl welcome!
I'm not sure where Bay City is but we are looking at maybe the Paw Paw area since it would be driving distance to Benton Harbor where my husband will be working.
We are all getting excited about the move. We don't have a place yet, but my dad and brother are already preparing to make me a chicken coop and a calving barn. My dad informed me of that after he had already said that he found an old lawnmower that he is fixing for us to use and he will bring the tractor this spring to till me up a large garden. I think that my dad is just as excited about us homesteading as we are. It's great to have family that support your decisions and love you unconditionally.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Emily

Hi Emily, and WELCOME to the nicest group of women online! Reading your post I know you will love it here! Where in IN did you grow up? I'm up in the NW corner of the state. I take my son to camp near Benton Harbor every summer-it's a beautiful area! So glad you took the plunge and have begun to post-and go back to the FARM! Best wishes on finding your new place.
Blessings,
Rhonda

Hi Emily -- My sister lives near Coloma, which is northwest of Benton Harbor! So I've been in that area many times over the years. I love the Paw Paw area -- very pretty. You'll love all the fruit orchards and fruit stands in the area. Hope you find a good place for you and yours. Let us know when you find it! Maybe I can pass on some 'neighborhood' tips from my sister once you're settled. --Katie

Welcome Emily. I like you already. My daughter is named Emily. She was born right in the middly of Hurrican Emily. So she came into this world with a bang. Congrats on your farm. I was born and raised on a farm and have always lived on a farm. Anything I can help you with let me know.

Hi Rhonda!
I grew up outside a small town call Earl Park. Our farm was on the newton county/ benton county line and just a mile from IL. Where are you at?

Emily, been away for a while so just getting around to welcoming you. You are probably in the middle of moving right now so good luck with that. Get back to us when you get all hooked up, up north. Your plan sounds like a good one!
