For us who will plant the Herb of the Year for Jubilee 2016 we are in for a treat this year - it's - Peppers (Capsicum). So many choices and degrees of heat to choose.
The International Herb Society selects the herb of the year. I went to their web site and copied what's coming through 2020.
2017 Coriander/Cilantro
2018 Anise Hyssop
2019 Hops
2020 Rubus which includes Blackberries, Raspberries, etc.

Interesting - I'll have to try some peppers - maybe in a pot to start with.

Linda, it'll be pot/pots for me too. I'll look for a pepper plant or seeds that I can't buy in the grocery store.

Sara, this is an interesting idea to do for Jubilee celebration. Hot peppers grow well down here in the long hot summer. I've never tried growing fresh hot peppers but maybe I need to give it a try.

Winnie one thing I like about hot peppers is that they make a pretty plant and can be grown in flower beds. Mine will probably end up in the front yard because there's a little more sunlight there.
I like to string red peppers on embroidery thread and hang in my kitchen. Fresh or dried peppers can be strung. Remember to wear gloves when handling any hot pepper.

Yes, gloves! In our house, if there are hot peppers to be chopped or prepared for ANYTHING, my hubby has to do it. I wear contact lenses and learned a very long time ago, that one does not handle hot peppers . . .in the event ya' have to touch your contact lenses for any reason (which is rare but occasionally)!

I like to dry them and make my own red pepper flakes. I don't like the seeds so I take the seeds out and put the dried peppers in the blender. I use the seeds on ant beds or to keep stray cats from doing their business in my flower beds.
Besides wearing gloves when handling the peppers be careful when you take the lid off the blender - the pepper flumes will take your breath away and burn your eyes & nose. Just remember to look the other way. It goes away in seconds.

Hmmmm, I am thinking these red peppers might just have to be ornamental for me. I am not much on hot, hot, peppers for eating as my stomach isn't all that keen about it if you know what I mean! LOL!!

Went to Tractor Supply yesterday and they have organic vegetable seeds. Just picked up some pepper seeds. We did pots last year and they didn't work out so well. This year we will put in a raised bed garden and put a fence around it.

Thought I'd share this tip with you girls:
We plant our tomatoes and peppers by plants and because we have deer to contend with I make use dog hair as deterrent. YES, IT WORKS! At least around here and in my garden.
I brush out the dog and take a tuft, tie a piece of string around it and tie it to the top of the plant. I used to just try to place the hair on the plant but come a stiff breeze and it was gone. I use lightweight string and the hair stays there.

Sara, you really perked me up this morning as I read this thread! I haven't planted the hot peppers for a couple of years because my SIL has started planted them. I pickle them for him. Over the years I have had much enjoyment planting, preserving, drying, stringing, and cooking with all kinds. Now, I'm getting Spring Fever!
I love the idea of planting peppers for jubilee this year! Does anyone know if it is a "Go"!?

Judith, I think there is no official plant - we are free to plant what works best for us and our locations. Two of the popular choices are roses and peppers.
I will make a marker for my 1 pepper plant in a pot and work on a Merit Badge too. As we work on Jubilee projects we can keep Merit Badges in mind.
Garden Gate #6 3 R's Rule (Reuse, Recycle, Revive!)
Beginner Level - Make markers out of tin can lids. Start saving those lids.
