We have had an unusual amount of snow for the last month so today after shoveling the driveway I finally thought the chickens might like more room. I am sure most of you would have thought of this faster than I did but my husband loves the chickens and loves doing their chores so I didn't think about it. The snow sometimes makes me a hermit so I hadn't been to see them lately. My husband always feeds them and collects eggs. I actually offered to take over the chore a few years ago when I cut back my hours at work and he said he wanted to take care of them still. So today I went to the pen and gave them some of their yard back. The snow out in their pens was probably 8 inches deep! I had know I idea it was that bad. I threw some corn out for them and after looking at the skiff of snow I had to leave them the walked right out and dug in clucking all the time. Those poor girls have been more cooped up than me due to this snow. Guess they still need me sometimes even if my husband takes care of their basic needs.

Emily, it's hard for me to imagine that much snow except in drifts. I know the girls are tickled to have room to scratch around in. I do believe chicken's favorite things are pooping and scratching. That's what my three do the most of.

Emily,
We've been dumped on with snow as well. Yesterday morning we had almost a foot of NEW snow on top of a lot already there. We are TRUDGING about 1 1/4 mile one-way to haul hay to our cows. Have to use a toboggan, which is doable, but this last round of snow has made it trudging for sure! Cows are doing fine too!

That is quite a trudge! I don't envy that at all. My husband came in last night after closing the chickens in their coop for the night and said it looked like they had quite a bit of fun yesterday afternoon. They scratched up the snow all over once they only had a bit of it to work with.

Strangely enough, it's mid-January and we've seen nary a flake here in New England. I'll take it! We've had so much snow the last few years. I give my chickens corn in the winter, too. Helps to keep them warm.
