I didn't make New Year Resolutions but I do have hope for the coming year. I hope to keep doing what is right and good ~~~ let go of what is wrong and bad.

Alicia, I like how you made your New Year's resolution list into a little art work. It makes it seem more alive and hopeful with nice lettering and a pretty flower! Good luck with making progress on your goal and keep us posted on how it goes. I saw on Girl Gab the photo of the homemade hamburger buns and they looked positively delicious!!

I am trying to decrease clutter this year and live more frugally. I am starting with using up yarn that is leftover from other things. First is all the partial rolls of dishcloth yarn. I have made 5 dishcloths in that last two days. I am also starting to make my own bread again. I love those $4 loaves at the store but make bread almost as good for a much better price.

I, too, need and want to de-clutter. I have been living in my farmhouse for 5-1/2 years, but sold my "city" house 1-1/2 years ago. I still have a huge pile of boxes in the garage to go through, because if I haven't needed something in 1-1/2 years, it needs to go to a charity, thrift shop, or garage sale. When the weather gets a little warmer (It's 32 right now), I'd like to do at least 3 boxes or more a week (I'd like to at least sort 1 box a day, but ... I get sidetracked sometimes. LOL!).

Yes!! Decluttering here, too! The thought of finding space in a 4 room cabin for everything is TERRIFYING!!! lol! I have been trying to purge for a bit now. I think what holds me up most are books (we own about 600) and fabric!

I love to hear the New Year's resolutions. But to be honest, I have learned that they sound great but don't get very far. So, I decided to make suggestions instead. I am suggesting I pick out 2 things on my list and really try to get a handle on them. Hopefully accomplishment will bring more success.

Decluttering is always on my list and especially at this time of year. It seems like putting away Christmas decorations and welcoming a new year inspires me to rethink "stuff". This past weekend, I filled several large boxes and sent then to the thrift stores. What is totally weird is that after all that work, it still seems like I have a ton of work to do! LOL!! A friend of mine has been reading a book about how to simplify and rethink what is worth keeping. Some of the techniques involve asking yourself if that "some day" is really ever going to come, if old items still light that spark of delight when you look at them or use them, does the item have any real use in your life on a regular basis, are you holding stuff from your children that they don't even care about or really want, and are you ready to rethink new and different in exchange for old and tired. I know I have many plastic storage boxes of belongings of my children from childhood. They both say, I don't have room to store them but the bigger question is do you even want it? I have taken some of their stuff to them to decide on their own, but I still have boxes they have never looked at. It is hard to get rid of their things but it also keeps their old closets jammed up. The same applies to stuff from my mom and aunts. Much of it is memorabilia that is just packed in boxes and stuffed in closets. What I was able to pass on to my nieces and nephews I have done, but even they don't want a lot of the stuff.
Do any of you have the same dilemma? I have my own stuff I have collected let alone stuff from my family!! Actually, it is embarrassing!! LOL!!

One thing that helped me get rid of some of my son's stuff was to realize that a lot of it was my memories and not his. So I kept a few of his baby and early years things and gave away the rest. I still have a shelf of his things which I have room to keep for him if he ever decides he wants it.
When he moved into his first apartment he took what he wanted. That should have told me right then and there that the other stuff left behind was not that important him.
This week I have gone through my scarf drawers. They're so pretty but I don't wear them like I did twenty years ago. I decided to see how many I could repurpose. One large one is now draped over my stack of old cardboard suitcases. A long one with fringe ~ I'll never do the fringe thing again ~ I cut in half to tie the old wardrobe doors shut. For the ones I no longer want I will borrow the idea I saw somewhere on the Farm to use old scarves to wrap gifts. Be forewarned FarmGirls what may be coming your way.

Yes Winnie! Our loft bedroom is filled with boxes. Most of them are Pfaltzgraf dishes from Matt's grandparents, seriously, like 15 or so boxes. They are sentimental to him I have no clue if we will ever use them. I tried pulling some out last Fall and he had a fit. Also I have a few boxes of Levi's(my son that passed away in 07) things that I can't seem to part with.

De-cluttering is very hard. The sentimental value is hard for me to give up. When my mother passed away, my sister (8 years younger than I) didn't want much of anything. Her daughter wanted a tea pot and cups set and a few other china pieces. I took quite a few things. I don't use them, but they look good in my china cabinets. LOL! I need to get away from that. I doubt my son wants old china (I haven't used) and linens (that I DO use). Just like all my fabric stash. LOL!

Me, too, Linda. I moved 36 times before graduating HS. I never held on to anything in my childhood, not by choice. Things were always lost, sold, or donated. The only thing I really have from my childhood are memories and a cabbage patch baby. So, naturally, I cling to things. Being in the same home for the past 13 years has helped nudge me, though!

De cluttering is an ongoing project at my house. I have been working on it since this past summer. Seems the more I get rid of the more there is to get rid of. (does it grow when you weed it out or something?) LOL Anyway I have gone through my closet and bedroom, the bathroom and our one storage closet. Really need to work on the kitchen. I have so many of my mom's dishes that I use but I also have my own that I don't want to part with. I have passed some on to my daughters and son. One weekend some years ago. My family were all gone for the weekend and I had the house to myself. I went through it room by room, shelf by shelf, drawer by drawer and completely cleaned and sorted and got rid of a ton of stuff. I didn't do anything in my kid's rooms they were all older by then and did their own rooms. Since then 2 kids have moved out and my dad has moved in and brought a houseful of stuff with him. I have sorted through much of his and mom's stuff but there always seems to be more. I told my husband we need to institute the 1 in 1 out rule. Dad is a major culprit in hanging onto EVERYTHING he has, buys or somehow acquires. But he comes from a time and place where they did not have much so.... This is my goal for this year is to get my house to a manageable state.

lol! Your dad sounds like my grandma! ;) I figure my issue is partially genetic...hehehe....
I sorta STARTED working in my sewing area last night. One of my goals is to sew more, one to start quilting. I can't even WORK in there until I clean it. It looks muck a fabric store threw up!! Anyway, I thought I would FINALLY get to the friendship quilt blocks, before spring comes along. I know some farm gals have been waiting a LONG time! I promise I am trying ladies!! I have fabric re-choosen!! :D

Wow it looks like de-cluttering is one of the top New Year’s resolutions for everyone. I hope you all can complete your resolutions. I can’t say that I really have any resolutions myself. All I know for sure is that I want to be the best woman for my family that I can be. I want to work hard at providing healthier meals and a more positive and encouraging atmosphere. I would also like to maintain a spotless house but we all know that will never happen so I am omitting that from the list to start with!

While I do not make New Years resolutions, I have been possessed by I don't know what to de-clutter while putting away Christmas decorations. I'll bet if I had made it an official resolution I would have quit already, but I have been a de-cluttering whirlwind! and am still going I am getting brutal about throwing away stuff, and has the time I pick something up I think "Why was I keeping this in the first place?" so out it goes.
I am oddly amused by the useless stuff I have had eating up some pretty prime real estate in terms of closet space and shelving. Really - what was i thinking? There must have been some logic there at some point, but.... |
