My name is Beverly and I'm a new member. I have lived in the country all my life and I love to garden, do crafts, sew and cook. I love to come up with ideas to make gardening a little bit easier. When I put my seeds in the ground or put a new plant in a pot, I like to label the rows or plant. One day I needed to do this but I didn't have anything on hand to do so. At least I didn't think I did. I started to look around in my storage building and I saw an old plastic blind that I was going to throw away. I took the blind apart and I used the one of the slats, cut it to the size desired, used a permanent marker to label the row or plant. I also saw that I can use other parts of this blind. I used the wand to stake the smaller plants and the string was also perfect to tie the plant to the stakes. On another day, while I was repotting my house plants and herb plants, I needed a very small glass container to root new plants. I couldn’t find anything that was the right size. I started to look in my recycle bins and noticed I had some Airwick containers. I pulled out the wick and a plastic cork, then washed and sterilized it. I filled them with water and placed the plants in them. They were perfect size! I wanted to share these ideas, as you never know what you have around your home until you need it!

Thank you for the ideas Beverly. I just happen to have some shades I was going to take apart for the cord. Now I can feel less guilty about throwing away all the slats. The cord crochets into a nice mesh.

Welcome Beverly and thanks for the repurposing tip. I always love projects that incorporate items that might have otherwise ended up in the landfill. That's the farmgirl spirit

I love using old or double duty stuff in the garden. If I have small sees or starter plants in the garden I love to use old glass lamp shades as a garden cloaks. They work great and look pretty cool too.

I bet those glass shades do look pretty neat in the garden! Come spring, you should share a picture :) A friend had a summer party, and she had collected old glass like those on oil lamps, and put small candles in them around her landscaping for a late evening outdoor dinner party - it was so pretty!

Tiana great tip on using glass lamp shades as garden cloaks. I use the glass tops to cake stands and cheese boards for covering my container plants. Both can be found at garage & estate sales and thrift shops for little $.

Diana and Sara thanks. I would have loved to see the the glass candles for the dinner party. That is right up my alley. As for cake the cake stand tops and cheese board tops what a great idea Sara. It never even dawned on me. I am at the thrift stores or our local mission store all the time. I will be looking for them for sure.

welcome bEV TO THE SISTERHOOD!! How I love recycling/ reusing things not only in my garden but throughout my home and landscape! I too used blinds at one time for labeling then used Popsicles sticks I had saved from our Popsicles & ice creams the previous year! I also found an old fan that was being trashed and me, I took the metal placed it in my metal scrap pile (I can get $ for it) and painted it to make garden art!! OH so many things one can do with re-purposing!!! Hope you have a great time as you share and learn here at MJFG blogs!!! WELCOME again!!!

Good morning and Welcome to MJF! I love your idea of recycling but how did your idea work. I have used plastic and wood markers with permanent markers and both faded to quickly and by the time the plant was fruiting I didn't know what specifically I had planted. I have fund something engraved markers works better for me. I do compost and use broken pots to recycle in my garden. I am also saving soda, beer, and wine bottles to outline a border.
Thank you to everyone else for all the wonderful ideas listed above, they are all great suggestions.

Jana, I too have had many markers in the garden. Most don't last all too well. Last year was plastic knives marked. I also collect colored bottles for my garden. I love it. It gives such pretty colors when the sun catches them. Maybe I'll try burning paint sticks this year? I think it will work.

There is nothing like recycling things to use in your garden. I found an old metal chair that did not have a back or a seat to it. I bought it to use in the garden as a decoration. It is a beautiful piece and I couldn't pass it up. I thought maybe I could find some kind of vine to let grow over it. I haven't decided yet. I want to use it in the garden I am making in memory of my little Lilly Mae

Vicki, Lilly Mae was my 3 year old Shih Tzu that was shot and killed by our dog groomers husband and thrown into the river with 3 other dogs. They had a fight and she walked out so he retaliated by shooting all of the dogs that were there. I never even got her body back to bury her. My husband and I are building a memorial garden for her.

Oh I'm sorry Lori I remember that now! Yes a Happy place is a good memorial for the innocent. So much going on I had misplaced who had the horrific brutal thing happen. You take your time and make it special.

Thank you, Vicki. I have been searching for just the right flowers and items I would like to put in her garden. I was going to make it a fairy garden but I remember how she loved butterflies. One day a butterfly landed right on her nose. It was precious! I miss that little darling so much. I was contacted by the man that I bought her from and he has puppies that are 2 weeks old. Lilly's brother is the father of them and one of the babies looks a lot like my Lilly. We went to see them today and the little girl won my heart in one second. We are going to get her. I miss having a little sidekick that I can carry around and love on like I did Lilly.
