As long as we're on the topic of what to give to others, do any of you give gifts to your postal carriers? I'm under the impression that a homemade gift of cookies or treats won't fly anymore (at least not in a big city). Is that true? If so, what should I give him? He's a total grump, but does put my packages in the backyard behind the fence when I'm not around... Any ideas for something small to say "thanks?"

a card with a gift certificate to a restaurant or something like that. My moth in law gives Barnes and noble gift cars to people at times when she doesn't know what to give so they can go pick something out and get what they want.

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe my blog http://sunshinescreations.blogspot.com

I don't think that they are allowed to accept money any more, but a gift card like sunshine mentioned might be okay. I'd check with the post office first though.

I know the newspaper delivery guy has no problems with accepting money - he evens sends us a special envelope to mail it in! LOL

Gift cards, homemade goodies, an ornament, or something he particularly likes. My Mom ran a highway contract route for 20 years so it's small town but she always appreciated a thank you gift.

What about a cute mug with some cocoa packets and candy canes or something like that? Not homemade, but cozy. I DO give our mailman homemade things, but we live in a tiny town and he is a family friend.

I have had the best postman for the last few years, always has time for a visit, and if I'am not here for a signed package he comes back at the end of his route to see if I'am at home. Even during that bad storm we had back in Oct. he stoped to see if I needed anything. Anyway I always give him money. Might have to be more this year because I do order a lot of stuff, and then there is the farmgirl packages! It depends on the service you get and how hard he has to work for you.

I always give a gift card to our postman. Once I saw him on his lunch hour enjoying a Starbucks, so I usually buy him a Starbucks gift card. He's a great guy, always carries our packages up to the door, and has extra volume for us because we run our business out of our home. He deserves a good cup of coffee!

And, because we're in suburbs, we also have garbage pick-up guys (regular and recycling). I tip them with cash -- also because of the 'extras' they do for us and our business.

We have one of those routes where there is a different person everyday so you never know where or when you will see your mail. We are also the postal hub where anthrax shut the main post office down for almost 5 years. So...considering these folks have been under alot
of stress, I always try to remember them with cookies and a small gift. I do love our little Crosswicks p.o. where I mail all your farmgirl things from. They are the best! And they are rewarded by good postal fairies for it! Our old town had a great "post woman" who would do those nice things you all mentioned. When she got pregnant our block had a shower for her!

I always give my postman/men a lotion bar...they handle paper all day and in the winter their hands really need that extra moisturizing. I somehow have worked it into conversations before time about whose allergic to wool and who isnt so if at all possible I give my Old Man Winter to them...contains lanolin and is YUMMY GOOD!

I go to the post office and usually don't give them a gift. I do give my garbage men some extra money at christmas.

Jewelry, art, baskets, etc.

We never have the same postman--I guess because our street is so long, and it's a "walking" delivery route we get "fill ins"....also, the last grumpy postman pepper sprayed my pit mix because he was barking (behind his fence)AHHH a Pitbull!!!!, so I'm not overly inclined to give--also, our current carrier delivers our mail at 5:30 pm!

Now, our garbage guy is my favorite person ever! He's super nice, and because I work at a shelter, oftentimes we get subpar foods, so I give them to him for his hogs....I just leave it out with the garbage on Thursday with a note that it's for him. I always get him a food giftcard so he can go out to eat somewhere.

Just think of all of the roads there are...all of the things I haven't seen....yet.

I try to make something different each year for our regular mailman and the substitute driver. Last year I make emergency vehicle kits. I sewed denim duffle bags (I bought yards and yards and yards of denim at a yard sale for a few dollars and used fabric I had already to line each one to suit the person) then machine embroidered snowflakes and the words Winter Car Kit on the bags. I filled them with hand knit mittens, windshield de-icer, lock de-icer, hand warmers, and a roll of paper towels. Added grommets to make it a drawstring bag that could hang in the garage other times of the year. My thinking was how cold their cars, and their hands, get delivering mail and what they might need in an emergency. These bags turned out so well that I made extra to give to neighbors who went out of their way to help us in one way or another. If I knew how to post a photo I would but...
