Hi Farmgirls!

I am a coffee lover. My husband makes coffee in the morning, and still, 23 years later, brings me a cup up to my bedside every. single. morning. He's such a sweetie.

I also love decaf. At least a couple times a week (don't have time everyday) I will make a cup or two of decaf in the afternoons or evening after dinner. Love love love to knit with a cup of coffee, or have coffee with friends

So...we buy organic coffee. Right now our fave is a bag of beans from Costco.

Every few years, it seems, I need a new coffee maker. I clean and descale, but they just don't last forever.

I've had drip style, different brands, a keurig, and espresso machines throughout the years. My Keurig is in the basement on a shelf. I don't care for the coffee, and I don't like that it is so wasteful and can't be recycled. (I did find some recyclable k-cups, and I do have a reusable one I can use my own coffee with. One cup at a time is not cost-effective, and to me just never tastes as good as brewed coffee).

Yesterday we realized we really needed a new machine. Our regular coffee machine was leaking from the bottom. Yes, the bottom. My counters are stained (I'm still working on them), and when I turned it around I found that it was corroding in back! Yikes! It wasn't terribly old, maybe six or seven years, from Williams and Sonoma. But it was used ALOT and ready for coffee maker Heaven.

Yesterday I bought a new coffee maker. Guess what kind?

Not a drip.

Not a k-cup style.

A percolator! Like my mom had in the seventies, and my mom and brother both now have again, too.

WE LOVE IT! It's easy to use, uses no coffee filters, and the coffee stays hot but not scorched. When I put my cream into it, it is still hot, not lukewarm. A whole pot took minutes, faster than any drip coffee makers I have ever owned. Simplicity.

Guess I am really a vintage, retro kinda farmgirl.

Now I am curious. How do YOU make coffee?

Farmgirl Hugs,

Nicole

Where in the world did you find a percolator??? I'm thinking this might be the perfect gift for my dear hubby for Christmas. I personally detest coffee... I cannot even get past the smell... but my oh my does my hubby love the stuff! Please share!

Nicole -

We use our Keurig, but we use the My K-Cup and our own coffee in the filter! I know you don't like it, but for us, it's perfect. We used to be HUGE coffee drinkers before the wrinkles and gray hair started popping up, but now we maybe have a cup a day - if that! For us the Keurig is economical. This way, we always have just the right amount fresh brewed coffee. And my hubby can drink his tooth-rotting, spoon melting cup o' black sludge while I'm sipping away at my sweet and creamy delicately flavored du jour! LOL! I also use it when I'm making a single cup of tea... I just use the brewer cup without the filter and let the hot water drip right onto my teabag in my mug! AND my son will use it for hot water when making hot chocolate (home made mix, of course!). For us, it really works...

Having said that, though, have you ever tried a French Press? I know that the "procedure" takes a little effort, but I've been eyeing them for a couple of years now. The other farmgirls are reporting back good things about it, too, so next time I come across a good bargain, I'm getting one!

And, KUDOS to you! I'm totally with you on the percolator - it's my all-time favorite, too! We always had percolators at our old church, and used them not only for big functions, but also for small meetings and as, teachers, for making the morning pick-me-up before Sunday School. Best cups of coffee ever! It's so funny, isn't it? They always say don't fix something if it ain't broke. And here, progress sure hasn't done much to improve upon perfection! People spend a FORTUNE on their coffee makers, and yet we're all starting to find that Mom's and Grandma's were really and truly the best!

Sending you a vintage, retro hug of farmgirl perfection, sister! :)

We do the K cups of coffee, but not often. We like the dark, black, strong coffee.

LOL! Nicole... My husband said, "Who are you kidding? It's pumpkin coffee time! You make it by getting in the car, turning the ignition, heading out to Dunkin's, ordering an extra large on ice, begging for extra cream and sugar...." LOL!

Not really... I make my own... But Dunkin sure is a nice treat every now and then! ;)

Nini, LOL! I don't do the "flavored" coffees at Dunkin, but from time to time, a decaf at DD is a good treat. Actually girls, for pumpkin spice coffee at home, I just sprinkle a bit of spice like cinnamon and other pie spices onto my ground beans before turning the brew cycle on. Delish!

I have tried a coffee press, in Europe at my danish relative's homes, but for us we drink too much coffee in the morning between the two of us.

Shannon, I found my percolator at Walmart. It wasn't on display but the boxes were there on the shelf next to the various coffee makers. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Hamilton-Beach-Stainless-Steel-12-Cup-Percolator-40614-Silver/23497219

Mine was $49 in store. My mom has the same one, she has had hers several years and it still works perfectly. My brother has a GE that is similar he got from Bed Bath and Beyond.

Nicole

HI Nicole, I am a coffee lover too! I use my drip system that I purchased from Starbucks in 2004. I love that the coffee goes directly into thermal caraf that keeps it warm but not over heated. I hate it when coffee ends up tasting like motor oil after it sits too long on the hot plate!!

I have tried using a percolator over and over again but it never comes out right. It is either too weak or too bitter. There are lots of good tutorial videos on Tube, but alas, apparently I just don't have the knack! It makes some very good coffee when done correctly.

Oh Winnie - that "baked" old coffee from sitting too long on the hotplate is beyond gross!

We just use a drip maker at home, but I love my French Press coffee at camp!

The fastest: Starbucks Via is actually extremely good and dissolves completely in cold water if needed. I joke with my Girl Scouts that I just pour it in my mouth, swish a little water around and gargle with it first thing so I can face the day after a night of not sleeping much at camp.

If you try the little Via sleeves, take careful note that the teeny tiny print instructions show dissolving the sleeve in only 6 ounces of water - not a typical US half gallon vat of a mug!

I'm the only coffee drinker in the house and I don't drink as much as I used to. So, I make mine in a one-cup cone drip with filters, right into a HUGE mug. I usually make TWO mugs for myself for the day. If anyone else is here I make it in a French press and when Robin and I go glamping we make it in the French press . . . then we pour it, while it's still hot, into our vintage thermos bottles which keep it hot for a long time. They work better than the newer thermal carafes!

Hahahaha, Cindy!! You make me laugh at the "night after" java infusion!! We take Starbuck's Via Decaf with us when when we travel. Most places still use that nasty freeze dried instant stuff or don't offer decaf at all. Starbuck's to the rescue!!

I have a Stelton carafe from Denmark. That thing is amazing...pour your coffee in and it is piping hot forever. If I make decaf and pour it in the carafe in the evening, the next morning it is still hot. Not sure how it works but it is glass inside.

I couldn't believe how rusted and corroded the back of my old drip maker had gotten! My grandmother's house burned down from that same kind of thing! Yikes.

Winnie, we have a ration of 10 cups water to 3 scoops coffee to keep it from being too strong. If I used the 1 to 1 ratio, it would look like motor oil, LOL!

So how does everybody take their coffee? I am a cream no sugar kind of girl. I like coffee with my milk. ;)

Hey ladies,
I am an avid coffee drinker. I grind my own beans in the old fashioned grinder with the handle and drawer. I do use a perculator (on the stove and I have an electric one) I use 3 level scoops of coffee for a 12 cup pot of coffee. On the old fashioned grinder it is about 2 of the little drawers full. I hope this helps.

I am also the only coffee drinker in our house, so I figured out how to use our standard coffee pot - a cheap Black and Decker model - like a Keurig. I fill my travel mug with water, pour that into the machine and then just add the amount of coffee grounds I want for the strength I like for that size mug - which happens to be 3 tablespoons, more or less.

I used to grind my own beans but just didn't replace my grinder after our house fire. I have a small French press too, but haven't used it in forever!

Nicole,
I like my coffee strong and "barefooted" . . meaning black! If I'm skimming cream off the milk (raw) from a local milk guy I will sometimes put a little of the fresh, yummy cream in about 1/2 cup of coffee. No sugar!

We do the one cup coffee maker. I found a company San Francisco Bay--it's actually Rogers Family Coffee CO. Nice people, biodegradable k cups. Love their coffee. You regulate the strength by the cup size you choose. You can find their coffee, bean, ground, k cup at Costco. They also have a subscription program which makes shipping free and coffee cheap.
We took a trip across country to pick up a motor home. Fly from WA to New York city. I meant to send a Melitta coffee pot before leaving to have in the motor home. WOuld only need a gas burner to boil water to make coffee this way. Thought for sure that part of the country would have such a thing. NOpe. No perculators either, no French press. Nothing but drip coffeemakers needing electricity. We had to camp in parking lots most night going west. I searched every Target, Walmart, etc for something just needing boiled water. We didn't have a working generator nor electricity most mornings. Hubby would opt to eat breakfast out so we could order some decent coffee. I'm spoiled I guess. Thought I was drinking pee water most restaurants we stopped at. First decent cup was purchased at a McDonald's in Iowa. Had to wait until I got home to find a Melitta. It's a conical shaped piece you put a filter in and coffee using their spoon. It sits on top of a glass pot with cup markings. Costs about $12. Add some hot boiling water let it sit a minute and then start pouring until the desired amount is dripped through. Awesome coffee. There are automatic pots made by Melitta and I keep one as a backup in the house. There's a Melitta in the motor home. Just in case the generator goes out and no electricity is naught. I make sure we have coffee when we camp and at home! Flavored coffee makes me crazy. Love Trader Joe's Pumpkin Spice. Dark, rich coffee, spicy but not too crazy. It sells out in days.

So far, I am loving my coffee maker. Thinking I might sell my k-cup machine on tag sale, but not sure.

I am sure though, that I am obsessed with coffee. Love, love, love it.

Dunkin is a weakness, though it isn't organic. Love it as a treat.

Coffee is proof there that there is such a thing as "magic beans".

I like my coffee with milk. No sugar.

If (no, not "if", "when") I get a glamper I think a k-cup machine would good there.

Nicole

Nicole, you are speaking to another coffee lover who likes her coffee similar to you! I think, however, that I make my stronger than you do based on your proportions listed plus I only use half and half with not sugar. The best part about coffee is the smell of it brewing and the delicious taste of your favorite brand just fresh out of the pot. Now with cooler weather ( for some people...cause we have been having 89 degree days with humidity the past 5 days!@#@) a good cup of coffee is welcomed any time of the day.

I use a Pyrex coffee pot on the stove. It is the all glass one from the 50's. Makes the best coffee. I found it at an estate sale brand new in box. Paid $1.00 for it. I have to be careful, as the glass stem and round glass disk are hard to find replacements due to the fact it is not made anymore.

Ok this will be handy for those of you who use electric coffee makers (like mr. coffee)and the power goes out (must have gas or wood stove to do this). Boil water in a tea kettle. Meanwhile, if your coffee basket has a flat bottom, remove it from the brewer. Put in the filter (we have a plastic one that we replace every 2-3 years because of wear and tear) and coffee grounds as usual then when your water comes to a boil, dump it into the basket/filter to the amount of cups you want to make. If the coffee in the urn gets cold, heat it on the stove in a small pan. It's not a perfect cup, but we've been doing this for years. It will do in a pinch during a power outage.

Awsome ideas for making coffee. I use a small 4 cup Mr. Coffee because I like to set it the night before to come on automatically in the morning. I grind the beans the night before in a burr grinder. My husband doesn't care for "my" coffee. We both use the same beans but he makes his in a Melitta drip coffee maker on the stove. I also like cream & sugar in mine but instead of sugar, I use honey. The hubby drinks his black with no sweetener. He says I "adulterate" my coffee. When we go camping, we use a french press and buy a bag of beans at Starbucks and have them grind it for french press.

We have a single cup Kuerig but didn't like it much. We've gone back to a French Press. I drink my coffee strong with cream, no sugar. For a treat I'll make espresso in an Italian stovetop espresso maker and add Sambuca if we have it. It's the way Leila....an Italian woman we cooked with in Introdacqua drank it. Yum! Definitely a treat.

Nicole,
Is your percolator electric? I remember we had one when I was a kid. I'm sure my dad would love one, he goes through coffee pots on regular basis, he had a BUNN coffee maker, lasted a long time, but it started leaking from the bottom. He has a Mr. Coffee (?) he likes it because it has a timer. He bought it when I was living there temporarily and he would set it for me every night so I had coffee when I woke up. I sure miss that... I have a Keurig, its ok and I only have one cup in the mornings. I have seen the old stove top percolators in the camping section but an electric one would be nice to have.

We use an electric percolator (Cuisinart from Sears), and have several stovetop percs: a Pyrex perc in the house, another glass perc in the rv, and a tin (?) perc at the cabin. The Cowboy isn't partial to one-cup coffee maker coffee or drip coffee... Or flavoured coffees or creamers ... Just good old perked coffee, and if it's made over a fire, all the better.

ETA... I forgot. The glass perc in the rv broke. We have a shiny, new metal one.

Hi Denise Ann,

Yes, mine is electric. I've had it several weeks now and still LOVE it. Got it from Wal-mart (not my favorite place but the only place they had it) and it has been great, for very little investment.

Let me know if you get your dad one. I bet he'd love it.

One of my favourite things! COFFEE!
Unfortunately, I have a Kuerig. I thought I would be in love with it and it was all the hype, but now that I've had it a bit, I truly prefer my plain coffee maker. For some reason or another the Kuerig makes my coffee taste terribly acidic and it is rough to enjoy. I've been drinking Campfire coffee until I can decide if I should put my Keurig up and buy a regular maker. It's one of those things where I am torn.

Just a little extra tidbit, I adore Campfire coffee and maybe you will too. So, here it is: :)

2cups of vanilla creamer
1 1/2 cups of hot cocoa powder
1 1/2 cups of instant coffee (but I like putting two tbsps of the mix into my already brewed coffee and leaving the coffee out)
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup of sugar (if using brown decrease to 1/2 cup, it gives it a richer taste)

Add 2 TBSPs to hot water and stir well. Super yummy with a dollop of cream on top!

Merry Days!
