I love to make apple butter, it's a real family favorite. It does have to be watched for a good bit of time, though, which can be tricky with my current family situation (one 2-year-old plus one 93-year-old equals lots of surprises hee hee!) So . . . I've heard you can make apple butter in the slow cooker, which would be a problem solved for me for sure. Anyone ever do this before? Thanks!

Amy, I have not had a chance to try this yet, but would be a great solution. I have a bag of apples taunting me from the refrigerator that I bought for this, but unfortunately have not had time to try it yet. I may need to just suck it up and putt in before bed and process in the morning this weekend. I don't wan to waste the apples!!
I will let you know what I find out. Denise Ann |

I just put up 8 pints of crock pot apple butter---I set my crock pot on low and cook it overnight-use my own apples as we had a bumper crop this year from my four apple trees in our back yard. I used to make quite a bit of jellies and butters but now that there is just the two of us here this season, I just didn't have the heart to put up any more than I did.

Amy, in case you are still looking for a slow cooker apple butter recipe, here is my favorite from the "Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook." I use an immersion blender to puree and freeze the extras but you could also can the apple butter.
5 pounds tart cooking apples, unpeeled, cored and cut up, or enough apples to fill your cooker 2 cups sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon cloves 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon allspice Pinch of salt
Coat slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Fill with apples almost to the top. As you load in the apples, sprinkle with the sugar in layers. Cover and let stand at room temperature all day. Add the spices and salt and toss with a large wooden spoon. Cover and cook on LOW for 10 to 12 hours or overnight.
In the morning, remove the lid and let the apple butter cook an additional 2 to 8 hours on LOW to reach the desired thickness.
Turn off the cooker and let cool slightly. Use an immersion blender to puree the butter until completely smooth. Transfer to small containers and freeze for up to 3 months. Will keep in the fridge for 3 weeks.

Thanks, Candy, for your Apple Butter Recipe in made in a slow cooker. I was thinking about trying something like this and decided to see if anyone posted on MJF with a recipe instead of looking elsewhere.

I have a really good(the best really)Apple Butter recipe that starts with applesauce and I make it in the crockpot. If you're still interested.

Yes you can, Julie. Here's the recipe:
9-10 cups applesauce 3 cups sugar....you can use less or none at all. Up to you. I use it. 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon cloves 1/2 cup Apple Cider vinegar. If you don't use sugar you might want to experiment with the vinegar, but it's the secret to this Apple Butter.
Cook in your crockpot until it's the consistency you want. Mine took most of the day. Then can or freeze. I process mine in a water bath 15 minutes for pints. Makes 7 pints.
