Here in Northeastern Washington we have had a terribly hot and dry summer and for most of the summer there has been a fire ban--no campfires even in campgrounds. They have lifted the ban in the Colville National Forest so we got to have a campfire on our latest camp out--oh how we missed campfires! Finding some edible mushroom were an added bonus.

My brother used to have a place near Curlew and oh my! I do remember how dry it could get. Be safe and enjoy your campfire.

Grace, Snow seems like a long way off. Weather has been absolutely gorgeous here but we need rain and it doesn't seem to be in the near future.

Boy, we certainly know what not being able to have a campfire is like. For several years, because of the severe drought in Colorado and our years of horrible wildland fires we've had bans for 2-3 months. My daughter and I were not to have a campfire while glamping until this summer. Thanks to a very wet month of May in this state and a big change in weather, we were FINALLY able to have campfires in June and you can bet your glamper-girl booties that we did . . . EVERY NIGHT and EVERY MORNING!!!! It was such a treat!!!

I have yet to camp without a campfire, but I can only imagine what a off feeling that would leave. The bans are critical - I get that part - but boy howdy would I miss my favorite part of camping.

I have some of my Girl Scouts as addicted to watching a fire go out as I am. It is so mesmerizing to watch the colors of orange change as we rake the embers before actually dousing it. If any outsiders were to watch us, they'd think we'd been hitting the medicinal pot as we all stand there around what looks like a defunct fire ring, "oolong" and "ahhhing" and barely moving, staring at the ground!

I wish you all happy camping, with or without fires. They are nice but the horrible forest fires when they happen make us glad to be alive.

Thank you, Jesus, that I have never experienced a wildfire personally, but our favorite hike in Rocky Mountain National Park (Cub Lake) was devastated by an illegal campfire that got away from the moron who lit it. I don't know how many acres were damage, but walking through charred remains to get to the destination lake that used to reflect beautiful evergreens and not reflects burnt poles is a huge reminder of the importance of following the fires bans....and a little common sense.

On a more positive note, we still do this hike as out "starter" hike to get our shocked sea-level lungs acclimated - the amount of climb and the distance is just perfect to begin our vacation. It has been interesting to watch Mother Nature do her thing and replace the burned out plants with others that are loving the sunshine, and to see a pop of vivid pink and green amongst the black when a wildflower has found just the right place to thrive.
