I noticed while cleaning today that the paint is cracking and falling away on a very old Norwegian Primitive cupboard that I have in the dining room. I need some advice regarding sealing it with varnish or shellac. I don't want to lose the hand-painted design in the panels,but I need to arrest any further flaking.....

Any suggestions?
