This past spring I mail ordered just over 2 dozen chickens. I received Australorps, Salmon Favorelles, Silver Spangled Hamburgs, Black Copper Marans, and was gifted 4 silkies, crested polish, cochins, and I think a brahma. What a mixture. I also hatched out some Easter Eggers. I ended up with around 7 roosters. Two are gone (too mean). I love the Favorelles they are so docile. It has been fun naming them. I named my two crested polish after Kramer on Seinfeld. They are Mr. and Mrs Kramer. They have the same crazy hair and as spastic as Kramer. I have a little golden cochin/silkie? that my grandson named Goldie Locks. I could go on forever, but I won't bore you. Naming the chickens have been so much fun though. Hubby thinks I have lost my marbles. There is even a chicken that can't seem to get up on the roosts, so every night I go in and put her up with everyone else. Have I lost my mind????????? Who else tucks in their chickens at night? Anyone?

Kem , I completely understand your passion for your chickens! You have raised them up from just babies and gotten to know them like any other pet. While I don't have any chickens, I know I would be doing the same thing you are. Who could resist? Pampering them makes sense to me!!

More to go This is goldie Locks. Named by my five year old grandson. This is Mr Kramer This is Mrs Kramer, they currently live with 3 Black Copper Marans. They came later and the others pick on them, so they have their own space until they get bigger. Onyx was also a gift from a friend. this is Prince, he is a mix and has a bit of yellow on his back, nicest rooster, he gets to stays. This is one of my 4 Silver Spangled hamburgs. Too much alike so I didn't name them, can't tell them apart. |

Thank you Sara, I really like them. But.....need to clean the coop today. You know how much fun that is, NOT!!!!!!! Hubby resided the chicken house with siding left from our house. He also made the pen with cattle panels, lined with chicken wire. He did such a nice job.

They are sweet birds, the naughty ones do not live here any longer. I am the queen of this bird kingdom and it has been declared that everyone has to get along or they are out. LOL (but I am serious) |

I love my chickens too. Yours are just beautiful!! I have 2 cuckoo maran hens, they lay my dark brown eggs. You coop is beautiful!! Your hubby did a wonderful job!! I had a trio of golden polish and they are pretty site are they not. the feathers sticking up are just to funny. I only had the one rooster so he bred with my other kinds so, I have some mixed chickens right now and I call them my funky chickens cause they do have some of the feathers that stick up. they are young yet so I will have to see how they turn out. I bred them this year with the hopes of having some roosters so they could become freezer chicken with all of the chicken flu going around, I wanted some of my own, but I think I have all hens. it will be harder to send them off to get butchered. mean Roosters are a lot easy to send off. I think my hubby thinks I have gone a bit cookoo too cause I like my chickens so much. they are just too cute. hehehehehehehe

Beverly, Interesting you have more hens and not much for rooster. How did you get so lucky? I had about 7 roosters this spring. Dang, I hate thinking about getting rid of them because they were born male instead of female. Poor guys. I have the black copper marans. I am hoping for the dark dark copper/brown eggs. That is why I bought them. Hope it works. Chickens are just plain fun. Do you have any silkie, frizzles, etc. I want some frizzles next year. I also want to try a couple phoenix, cream leg bars, and anything else that is unusual or colorful. Are Easter Eggs the only ones that lay and true vibrant robin egg blue? That would really make me happy if I could get a hen that would lay a true blue egg for me. |

I bought my Ameracanans or however it is spelled from McMurray Hatcheries last year. They lay very pretty blue eggs. I want to get one that lay the olive green ones. which is a chicken that is crossed between the cuckoo marans and a green layer I think. that would be fun. I am getting a pair of silkies very soon. A friend of mine breeds them and he is keeping them for me. He also breeds parrots and other birds. Yea I feel bad to breed the roosters only to eat them but the golden polish rooster I had was not nice, so, I am kinda of expecting his sons will be the same. But I am trying not to buy chickens due to the chicken virus that is going around right now.

Oh, you're not alone, darlin'! I have named my chickens, and my roo, and I pet them, hold them, baby them, and tuck them in each night. I always say thank you for their eggs, give them treats, and tell them when I shut the coop door each night that I love them. :)
Love your chickens and the great photos!
