I don't know if you farmgirls are aware of the situation here in SW Colorado where the Animas River has had toxic mine blowout water pollute it. It has made national news and it is a very SERIOUS situation. I don't recall when it happened, but just a few days ago. The EPA accidentally unleashed the spill, said to be 3 million gallons, while inspecting an abandoned mine near Silverton, Colorado
You can read about it at:
www.DurangoHerald.com

It's kind of a complicated story but the Animas River flows through Durango, Colorado, feeds the San Juan River which is in New Mexico and eventually feeds the Colorado River.

It has huge, huge, HUGE impact on the Navajo Nation in New Mexico and Arizona, on livestock water needs, irrigation needs, etc., etc. all along the river. I mean HUGE!!!!!

Durango is only 50 miles east from us, but we're on the west side of the LaPlata Mountains (part of the San Juan Range of the Colorado Rockies). On this side our water doesn't come from the Animas, it comes from the Dolores River. However, the potential exists for similar situations to happen in any of our mountain mining towns.

PLEASE PRAY FOR THIS SITUATION! The river will "clean itself" but it'll take a while. Meanwhile, there are those who are suffering because fresh water supplies are running out.

THANKS SO MUCH!
CJ

P.S. Today's Durango Herald states the "threat is lessened", which may be so, but that doesn't mean that those really hurting will have fresh water when they need it.

I did see this, and have been praying for the people and the land affected by this. How sad, and I agree that the story was soft pedaled.

How ironic that the government organization responsible for environmental safety unleashed this disaster. I feel for the Native Americans who depend on this river. It's not just a catastrophe for them, it's a blight on their Mother Land--which they really consider to be a true Mother. I know I'd be furious if the Mississippi River that flows past my town suddenly turned orange. When the govt. figures up the "cost" of this disaster, their will be no mention of the human cost in suffering. there never is. I pray for the people affected by this. God knows the true cost and He will hold those accountable, accountable.

This affects the entire Animas River valley from Silverton down to every river the Animas feeds into. Durango, CO on down!

I was horrified CJ....It looks so creepy and unnatural.

When you say the river will clean itself out-what are they guessing time-wise? Will there be any charges against the perpetrators? I fear once the damage is done it will never be the same again. What a catastrophe.

Mel,
I don't know if there is an estimated time frame for it to "clean itself". There IS still snowpack in the high mountain peaks that will be melting and with runoff, as well as other tributaries/creeks that will feed fresh water into the river. I'm hoping they have "plugged the leak" at the mine, which I think has been done. It make take a good, hefty spring runoff next spring to really do the job thoroughly. I'm no expert, but I have seen what runoff does to the creeks and rivers. Our mountains are HIGH and STEEP and, yes, there is still snow on the very high peaks.
Charges against perpetrators? Hmmm . . . I don't know. I DO hope it is prompting some closer work on any other potential mine blow-outs! Our mountains are full of them!
Thanks for your concerns and your prayers!
CJ

I haven't heard anything new about this situation, but I believe that the river is "clearing up" considerably. There has also been some recent rain and that will help. I also believe that the rafting companies have been allowed to have their rafts back in the water.

Sorry, I don't know any more . . . I also don't know how things are for the Navajo Reservation.
I'm still praying and if I learn more specifics I'll post here.

Thanks for your concerns and your prayers!

We were in Durango yesterday and the river looks its normal self . . . clear and running as usual for fall. Glad to see that.
I don't know the latest on the EPA issue, etc. but I'm sure that's not over, by a long shot!
