Dear farmgirls, It seems that all my socks have worn out at once. :) I wear only skirts, so I tend to buy knee-high cotton blend socks to wear under them, since I don't like tights. I especially like colorful socks with ribbons at the top. But I wear them to death. Hence, I now have many pairs of pretty, long socks that are hopelessly worn out at the heels and toes, and I am wondering if there is any way to make use of the remaining ankle-to-knee section. Any interesting ideas?
Sincerely,
- Elizabeth Ann

We save our worn out socks for rug making.
Here is a pic of a sock rag rug. www.ojai.net/threadsofjoy/pix/pix/P4130001.html Here are some more from etsy - http://www.etsy.com/category_sub_sub.php?tags=housewares.bathroom.rug
All you do is cut the socks in 1 inch loops, and then connect the loops by looping them together to make a long chain. When you get your loom set up, you use your loops to weave the rug. It makes a very cushy, absorbent rug thats nice for in front of the sink or in the bathroom.
I have found 2 rug frames on garage sales for less than 15 dollars each. In fact, one was only $5. I bet you could find one on ebay. Or build it. It just needs to be a large rectangle or square shape.

Gee Babs, you just reminded me of something I had forgotten all about. Many years ago my Mom worked at a steam laundry. They had bags and bags of odd socks and she brought them all home one day and set to work on a braided rug. That rug was about 6'x4' as I remember it finished and it lasted probably 30 years. Di |
