I am hoping you wonderful women can help me. My family and I are looking for a place with great schools. We have two children that will be in Jr. High this next year and will need gifted schools. The schools in our very small area just don't have the "money" for gifted programs. Please don't suggest homeschooling, we've done this and our children want to go to school.
Any suggestions or places that have good schools in your area? We are a simple family.
Thank you,
Twinsmom |

I have done some research on gifted programs in the Minneapolis area. I volunteer in the Minneapolis School District and I mostly work with the struggling students. I have seen some gifted students in my school and was not familiar with the programs. My brother was a gifted student who probably could have advanced two grades and was kept with his peer group. My mom got him into special out of school programs especially in the summer.
Here are some links for you to look at:
Article about the shortage of gifted programs inside the city of Minneapolis and what some parents do:

A list of full-time gifted programs by the Minnesota Council for the Gifted and Talented. This organization has a great deal of information on programs in Minnesota.

This is the most recent information from the Minnesota Department of Education:

I won't lie to you. Our city schools struggle with funding from the legislature and the sheer number of kids not performing up to grade level. However, here we have citizens who value education and will do all that is necessary to improve the outcomes. The governor recently proposed that the state fund pre-school for every child at age 4. It was not approved by the legislature. No one is giving up on this proposal.
Minneapolis is a beautiful city with many parks and lakes inside the city. We have several well-known art, theatre and dance organizations. The city is a relatively safe place but it is a good idea to know someone (me!) who can show you around and let you know what REALLY goes on. We are probably the most diverse city in the Midwest hosting the largest populations of Hmong, Tibetans and Somalis who have escaped political persecution. This has made our city a rich tapestry of food, music and arts.
Besides, I'd love to have a farmgirl nearby.

I live in Naperville, IL. Districts 203 and 204 are known for their superb school systems. There is a very high number of gifted children in our district and the schools are set up perfectly for them. The entire system, k-12, are excellent schools. The average income in our town is considered high and the school fundraisers bring in large amounts of money. Giving them the ability to offer many excellent programs on top of having the current technology available for everyone.
Best of luck finding the best school for your family. Dawn in IL |
