Hello fellow Farmgirls - - when I was 17 my first job was as a long distance operator (when there really was such a thing) - - and they called themselves "girls" which I thought really ironic - - most of them were at least in their 30's - - now here I am a 73 yr old "girl" - - and feeling more girlish than I did at 17 - - I lived in Minnesota until I was 13 - a city girl - but had relatives on farms and in small towns - - earth, air, farm animals, and lots of lakes for fishing and skating on when frozen over in the winter, make up my DNA - - on to Colorado until at 20 yrs old with 2 kids - my husband wanted to settle in California after his Navy stint - - so here I am 4 kids later, a widow, 8 grandkids and 4 great-grandkids - - I love everything MaryJanesFarm - - and look forward to getting to know all of you - - I am now retired - live in a one bedroom apartment - no place to farm but lovely grounds to walk around in - and plenty of room for crafting - my sewing machine and ironing board are always up and ready to go - - I need to eat gluten free and love trying new recipes -
blessings and love to all of you precious girls - - Gramma

Welcome Bonnie,

I don't live on a farm either but I do love the farm life style. Some day, a few years from now when my husband whats to retire we will get a ranch in Montana may be?
My Grandmother was a long distance phone operator to in her youth too. I used to work in a bridal shop in Monrovia. I miss that job sometimes.
I was such a joy to help a girl find the perfect wedding dress.

Hello FarmGirls,
Wanted to introduce myself and really excited to be a FarmGirl. I live in western Kentucky and wonder if there are any chapters in this area. We live in an old school house about 25 minutes to town. Have been working on trying my hand at gardening and raising chickens. Did not do to well with that but will keep on trying. Getting ready to learn how to drive the Oliver tractor. I have spent many years as a nurse specializing in wound care and for the past 15 years have had my own practice as a Holistic Nurse. I love to sew, garden, scrapbook, fix up old furniture and really enjoy people. I am sure the rest of yo feel the same way, but can hardly wait for my Mary Jane's Farm magazine to arrive. Nice to meet you. daisybloom

Welcome Bonnie and Mary -- Wow! From California to Kentucky -- just another thing I love about the Sisterhood. Things that work on the left coast don't always work in the green hills of the heartland and vice-versa. I can't tell you how many tips and treats and wonderful ideas I have gained in my short time being here.

I hope you both take some time to cruise around the chatrooms and forums -- so many fun people and so much great information. Welcome welcome!

Thank you for the welcomes. It is interesting living in the old school , but a lot of work. It was built in 1978 and has 26,000 square ft. We made the principles office our bedroom and 3 other bedrooms for company. For the first year and half we did not have hot water or a kitchen. Used a hotplate and had to carry water, BUT now i have a kitchen and REALLY appreciate it! There is no central heating system in the school so winters are a challenge and can truthfully say I am so excited about spring being here.
We are planning to make raised beds because the topsoil was pretty much removed and clay and rock remained. All in all, love it and really love Kentucky. I have been browsing around the chatrooms and can see there are many wonderful people with a wealth of knowledge.
