We have two 6 month old kittens which are litter mates to Missy's kittens. I can't believe how much water these two kittens drink -- especially the black one. These guys go through 4 to 5 bowls of water a day and beg for more. Missy said that she experiences the same thing with both kittens but especially the black one. Mama was the same breed as the two black guys and she drank lots of water.
Then there is the litter issue. They go to the bathroom so much that we have to scoop the box 3 times a day. I'm going through 20 lbs of litter a week because they pee so much!
I've tried changing food and nothing changed. Someone suggested maybe they have diabetes. Is this possible? Has anyone ever had cats that drink this much?

stupid question - but one of my cats had diabetes before she died at the age of 20 plus years - does any of the cat urine look like it has crystals in it?? Crystal are a sign of diabetes

We had a cat that had diabetes as well, but it was much older. I don't know about in the US, but I picked up a blood glucose testing kit at the drugstore for $10 and tested him myself to make the diagnosis. It was much cheaper than the $50+ the vet wanted and the results were instant. He drank volumes of water and would eat like there was no tomorrow while continuing to lose weight. It might be harder to tell with kittens, but with Joe, he would get really sleepy soon after eating.

Kay, my dog was drinking and peeing way too much. I was expecting to hear diabetes, but it turns out she had a urinary tract infection. After 2 weeks of antibiotics she tested fine. Way better than diabetes. Maybe take 1 cat into the vet and find out?

have they recently been spayed or nuetered? this will increase their water inrake, at least that's what my vet told me when we spayed our cat.

We gave our cat a liguid medicine that was alot cheaper than insulin and it had a tuna smell added to it so she just opened her mouth and took it.. i know some cats just drink more water than some (we have rabbits and cats like that) but maybe borrow some glucose test from a diabetic friend and maybe you can measure ( I can mail some strips to test but need to borrow a meter thing)

Kay...we have two new kitties at our house too, they are both girls. One is grey and one is black...and I am shocked by how much they eat and drink, and how much they poo and pee...I guess we just forget how much babies of any species eat and drink, and what goes in must come out!
Your litter box sounds like mine! In my non-professional opinion, it sounds normal...we have it going on at our house too.

| I have two cats, not related and they are OBCESSED with water. The older one, Soxy will not drink water from a bowl, so she BEGS like a dog for you to turn the water on in the bathroom sink. My husband just called me in to take a picture of her 'making out' with the faucet that ihas no water going to it yet. She will get in the shower and drink water, and also likes to help me dry off after the shower. She is much more worried about water than food, but healthy, so I assume she's alright. I agree with getting the insulin tester. I'm sure a vet or a source online could tell you what the right blood glucose level should be. |
