Hoping to get some inspiration and how to. We are lookin to get a farm and we have had horses before so I know about them, but cows I dont and we would like to get some. Milking cows, I'm thinkin? but can you just have a few ? and what do you do to the milk to make it okay to drink? You girls are wonderful and I love this site. I have gotten so many thoughts and ideas from so many ..

I just have ONE cow..but then, she is the perfect cow! you do have to have some sort of animal friend for them though..herd animals just don't like to be alone. My Mona has an angora goat friend named pearl, and two ewes..Trixie and Juliet..they all coexist happily.
We drink the milk from Mona every day (as well as use the cream, make butter and ice cream, cheese and yogurt..it is wonderful stuff) if you are very careful to be very clean about handling, and filtering it..that is all you do. I skim off the cream after about 12 hours in the fridge and use it separatly.
I really recomend the book "Keeping a Family Cow" by Joanne Grohman. It is wonderful She has a website with a forum too..I LOVE it. I love that the book is written by a woman from a woman's point of view and that it is about having A cow..not a dairy....so it is writting from that standpoint too. www.keepingafamilycow.com
and I LOVE baskets too!! heehee

I'll second the "Keeping a Family Cow" recommendation from Jenny - she told me about it and I bought a copy and I love it.

You CAN have a family cow! Jenny sure does with Mona, and once I get Bridget (my Dexter) bred and calved, she'll be our family milk cow, too. From what I understand, you really can have as many or as few cows as you would like - I think that a Dexter will give around 4 gallons of milk a day, while Jenny's Jersey, if I remember right, gives around 6 gallons.

How exciting! My husband thought I was crazy at first too... and now he knows for sure!

XOXO, Libbie

I think that I am going to get that book. We need to find and buy our property first. I just like to plan and now what I want to do. And this is a great place to learn.
