My parents will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in July. My Dad has advanced Parkinson's disease. My mom has severe degenerative arthritis which resulted in a foot amputation several months ago so she is currently wheelchair bound - but slowly learning to walk with a prosthesis. They are both living at home and I'm helping to take care of them but they are simply not up to a traditional 50th Anniversary party. As a result my brother and I are trying to come up with ideas for a way that we can help their friends and family from all over the world celebrate their special day without arriving for a party. We thought about mailing out postcards with a place for each person to share a special memory and send them back so we can put them in an album. There are so many creative minds on this formum I thought I'd start here for some great ideas. Has anyone else done something like this before? Any suggestions? Your input is much appreciated!
Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Marilyn,
I think your postcard idea is great!!
Is it possible to have a simple, small open house celebration at their home? Where folks could come, visit a bit, perhaps serve cake and coffee? If you sent invitations to close friends and family you could control the crowd that way. That is what we did for my parents 60th anniversary as my mom had been very ill and not able to get out.
Hope you find some good ideas! CJ

Marilyn - I LOVE the postcard idea, too! I was thinking it might be fun to have everyone send a video message to them on a cell phone, too. They can play them over and over and over. Hugs - Nini

Thanks for the suggestions CJ and Nini! A smaller gathering might actually work for us if we can reach a family consensus on how to narrow the guest list to a reasonable size. The video idea is really cool but I'm secretly wondering how many of my parents' friends would need to get their kids or grandkids involved to help them with vidoe technology LOL!

I am thinking that with my parents being from the era they are, my mother would LOVE getting a billion greetings cards. She would sit and read them over and over (and over and over and over) and enjoy them each and every time. Then you and Brother Dear (and perhaps a very few close friends) could have a nice get-together on their special day. (Of course, you know me -- I would have to send out fabric squares and have everyone sign them so I could make them a quilt!)
Take it easy, but take it. |

I like the greeting card idea too, other Marilyn! You know my mom would get a kick out of the quilting squares too....maybe her cousin could help make a quilt. Hmmmm.....more ideas to kick around!
